The most famous manufacturers of wristwatches for outdoor activities. Watches for tourism: compare characteristics and choose the best Men's watches for outdoor activities

Outdoor enthusiasts don't always have the best option when it comes to sports watches.

But as fitness accessories have become very popular, manufacturers have begun to pay more attention to this market segment. Instead of simply making a watch for running and cycling, you can get a really good device for use in any outdoor activity - from simple hiking to mountaineering and open water swimming.
No matter how difficult it is, we will try to make the most of the available options. We made our selections based on the features of each watch model and how those features translate to outdoor use. But first, let's take a look at the most important features of a good outdoor watch.

Features of watches for outdoor recreation

Good hours for tourism are determined by several features.

1. Large display

A few years ago, it was impossible to use your phone outdoors because the screen was too bright. But smartphone display technology has improved significantly, to the point where this is no longer a problem. This has been an advantage for watches as manufacturers can apply similar technology to make watches easier to use outdoors.

A good display will ensure that you can see everything on it quickly and easily, no matter the weather conditions.

You don't have to squint, look for shadows, or cover your watch with your hand to check the time, mark your distance, or find your current location.

2.GPS

Nothing is more difficult. It’s easy to get lost in nature, especially in remote areas, in the forest or in the mountains. You must have a GPS watch if you want to track your location at all times. Assuming you will be away from civilization, we would recommend a watch with assisted GPS (A-GPS), or Glonass (Russian version of GPS). These two features greatly increase GPS performance, coverage, and connection strength.

With a GPS-equipped watch, you can plan your routes ahead, research them and make sure they are safe.

3. Compass

This is a basic feature that should be included in all outdoor watches.
While GPS is supposed to help you navigate in the wild, you may find yourself in a place where there is simply no connection.

Instead of moving blindly and putting yourself in danger, a compass will be the second best way to avoid getting lost in the forest.

4.Protection from water and dust

The wild is a pretty tough place. You will encounter rain, water, ice, dust and much more. Normal watches will not be able to withstand the wildness of such walks. When it comes to hiking watches, they should be designed to withstand as many elements as possible. The International Protection (IP) rating is a rating for determining how good an outdoor watch is. It indicates the level of protection against dust and water for electrical devices.

For travel watches this class should be IP56. The first number indicates protection against dust, while the second determines the level of protection against the penetration of water and other liquids.
IP56 rating will keep your watch working even in the rain. If you plan to go swimming, or you need maximum protection, then look for an IP68 rating.

5. Battery life

There is nothing more daunting than being in a remote area and suddenly discovering that your battery is dead from using GPS. There is a chance that your smartphone's battery is also dead, or about to die. To avoid this, look for smartwatches that have a long battery life. The minimum duration must be 48 hours. But you can find watch models with a battery that lasts up to four days or even longer.

You can carry a portable external charger with you that can last you for several days, especially if you are planning a long hike.

6. Durability

On your journey you will face many difficult situations. Your watch will inevitably hit things, get scratches, and more. They need to be strong enough to withstand all the bumps and bumps and reliable enough not to break after your first or second outdoor adventure.

5 best watches for outdoor activities

1. CASIO PRO TREK PRW3000

The CASIO PRO TREK PRW3000 has been designed for precise positioning as well as maximum battery life. For $300, the watch packs a range of sensors into a sleek but tough body, and is finished off with a soft, lightweight urethane wrist strap.
One of the best features of the CASIO PRO TREK PRW3000 is that it is solar powered.

Once charged, they can maintain a full charge for months as long as they receive sunlight to charge while you're outdoors. If you're looking for a travel watch that won't die on your wrist, this is it.

To keep you safe and aware of your surroundings, the watch features an easily accessible compass, barometric pressure sensor, and temperature sensor.

Fans of outdoor activities will certainly appreciate such a technical feature as atomic timing. It is used to obtain accurate time readings at all times, no matter where they are.

The watch receives calibration instructions 5-6 times a day. Other features include:

Resistant to low temperatures down to -100C or 140F.
Resistant to water at a depth of up to 100m.
Full LED backlighting with afterglow function.
Information about sunrises and sunsets.
Timer and stopwatch.
Energy saving function.
The watch doesn't have GPS, but the compass and other sensors will keep you on track.

2. GARMIN FENIX 3

Garmin is a leader when it comes to sports and outdoor devices. Like most of their products, the Fenix 3 will not disappoint. First, they come equipped with GPS and Glonass for faster, stronger and more accurate communications with satellites.

To help track your location, Fenix 3 includes a barometer to measure pressure, an altimeter to measure altitude, and a compass to determine direction.

For outdoor adventures that involve cycling or running, Fenix 3 has several fitness and workout tracking features. They contain a consultant on speed, distance, pace, maximum oxygen consumption and recovery. You can use these training features in any sport, including climbing, running, skiing and diving.

The display consists of a hard crystal dome that will withstand the harshest of natural conditions. Much of the exterior is reinforced with durable fiberglass, while the buttons are made of stainless steel for maximum durability. For readability, a rich color display and LED backlighting are used for easy use in any lighting conditions.
To stay connected to the world, the watch can connect to your smartphone and receive notifications including messages, calls and emails. You can further customize your experience through compatible apps found on the Connect IQ platform.
will be a natural choice for outdoor enthusiasts who are also interested in many types of sports activities.

3. GAMIN EPIX

While the Fenix 3 is made with sports in mind, the Epix is definitely a watch for explorers. They are designed with adventure in mind. For starters, they have a feature common to most Garmin gadgets: a combination of GPS and Glonass. This gives you a faster, stronger and more accurate satellite connection.
The watch comes pre-installed with a variety of topographic maps, a global terrain base map, and a year's subscription to high-resolution satellite projection. This should be enough to calculate your surrounding location and terrain. But Garmin Epix doesn't stop there. With 8GB of internal memory, you can load many more maps for navigation. Various third-party maps, such as City Navigator or BlueChart, can be really useful for your adventures.

The basic altimeter, barometer and compass suite of sensors provides real-time information about altitude, pressure and location, keeping you in the know. Pressure readings can be useful for forecasting weather conditions.
To withstand the challenges of nature, Epix watches feature a rugged construction that can withstand 50m of water, mineral glass lenses and a tough PVD (vacuum deposition) coating. Pair them with your smartphone via Bluetooth to receive notifications.

4. SUUNTO TRAVERSE ALPHA

The Traverse Alpha watch is made to military standards, managing a combination of functionality and rugged design, no matter what, keeping it stylish. They come with GPS and Glonass connectivity, ensuring a strong connection even when you're out of coverage.
Unlike most outdoor watches, the Traverse Alpha comes with tools specifically for fishing and hunting.

They have built-in shot detection and tracking, moonrise and moonset times to help determine the best time to fish, and a barometer to predict stormy weather conditions and route guidance.
If you're going on a backpacking trip, you can use a barometric sensor to track your ascent.

You can save points of interest, and you can use the digital breadcrumb trail to retrace your path. Add a compass to all this, and you have no chance of getting lost.

The design will be of the quality expected from a military standard watch. It comes with a hard stainless steel glass mount, a water-resistant strap and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. To prove the durability of the watch, the manufacturer subjected it to various tests, including shock, vibration, freezing, immersion, sand, dust and humidity.
If you're looking for a GPS watch for people who are serious about outdoor activities, then this model will be at the top of your list. They combine all the coolest features with tough looks that won't disappoint you.

5.OMATE RISE

As outdoor watches evolve, this model doesn't deserve a 5 star recommendation. In terms of performance, they don't even come close to Garmin Epix or Suunto's Traverse Alpha. The reason we included them on our list is because they stand out.
All of the outdoor watches on our list, and most outdoor smartwatches, have one thing in common: they rely on your smartphone for calls, messages, and emails. This creates extreme dependency where you need to have your phone at your fingertips at all times to stay connected to the world. But not with Omate Rise.
A slot for a micro SIM card gives the watch 3G connectivity. Once you install a micro SIM card, you can make and receive calls, send and receive messages and emails. And all this without the need to connect to a smartphone. This connection method can be really useful when, while outdoors, your smartphone suddenly runs out of battery, or it gets lost or broken.

With this fantastic feature of sending calls and messages, can they really withstand the elements? First of all, they have been rated as waterproof up to 1ATM. This means that their maximum diving depth will be 10m. It will be able to withstand rain, spilled juice, and wading through swamps, but it is not a watch for swimming or diving. The display contains anti-scratch sapphire coating to protect the watch from bumps and scratches.
They also come with GPS support, weather updates, fitness tracking and music to keep you entertained.
The Omate Rise isn't as cool as most multifunctional outdoor watches. They're designed for dedicated outdoor enthusiasts who hate being dependent on bulky phones. With Omate Rise, you can leave your phone at home and go hiking or running, knowing you'll stay connected with family, friends and colleagues.

FINAL VERDICT

It is really not easy to determine the winner from the watches reviewed. Each of them is good in its own way. However, when comparing general features, Garmin Epix can probably be called the best. They were very close to the Suunto Traverse Alpha, but with the ability to download maps, the Garmin Epix take the top prize.
If you're planning on going camping for a few days, or even weeks, we recommend the Casio Pro Trek PRW3000. For adventure lovers who want to stay connected, Omate Rise is ideal. For more sport-oriented adventurers, Garmin's Fenix 3 will provide a variety of training features.

  • Casio's hybrid sports watch will feature...

Most enthusiastic tourists sooner or later have a desire to buy a special watch for hiking. So that they are not afraid of water, withstand cruel treatment and delight with various tourist functions.

I came across one forum where a beginner was advised to look at a watch with a price tag of 1000+ bucks. Models of tourist watches for active use in a lower price category were labeled “underwatches”. The arguments are simple, they say, “you’re not buying for a year.”

Such snobbery is of course amusing, but an unenlightened person, after such advice, will most likely refuse to purchase altogether. The claim that a good hiking watch should cost at least a thousand greenbacks is nonsense! A watch for $100 or even less will serve its owner for many years no worse than expensive models, despite aggressive use. Let's figure it out.

There will always be two types of people. Some remain adherents of wristwatches, while others prefer to look at the time on a mobile phone; it is more convenient for them and there is no point in convincing them otherwise. Let's not say now which is better. In my opinion, everything is obvious here. But when choosing a watch specifically for tourism, do not forget that the main purpose of any hiking watch is to show the time correctly and reliably withstand external loads, and it is also important to understand that most options are rather pleasant additions than a necessity.

I would divide watches suitable for hiking into two categories. Actually, they are tourist watches, designed specifically for hiking enthusiasts and are crammed with all sorts of options, and also, as I call them, “near-tourist watches” - these are watches that, in addition to displaying the time, can resist water and shock, plus simple functions such as a timer/stopwatch/alarm clock.

Why do they love tourist watches?

The functionality of modern tourism watches is very wide. But I will describe my attitude towards the most popular options:

Waterproof and shockproof

In my opinion, these are exactly the functions that primarily distinguish tourist watches from ordinary ones. Protection from water and shock is a must. Hiking is an extreme operating environment for your watch and exposure to moisture or accidental shocks are simply inevitable. We’ll talk more about water resistance in a separate post; I don’t want to overload the text.

Barometer

Displays current pressure. With its help you can forecast the weather for the next day. From the monitored indicators, the watch generates a graph of pressure fluctuations, from which the user can determine whether the weather will improve or worsen in the near future.

It’s simple, if the pressure drops sharply, then the weather will probably worsen and there may be rain, and if it rises sharply, then on the contrary, the weather will most likely improve. A straight graph indicates that the weather will be stable.

In general, a barometer is a very useful thing on a hike. If possible, choose a watch with this function; it can be very useful when traveling.

Altimeter (altimeter)

Shows altitude above sea level. It would seem that this is a very convenient and useful function for mountain hikers and climbers. But there is one “but”. The altimeter on the watch does not always display the altitude correctly.

This is because most altimeters measure altitude based on barometric pressure. Pressure tends to change not only with altitude, but also depending on the weather and even the time of day. Therefore, even if you are at one point for a long time, you may notice fluctuations in the altitude readings of your wrist altimeter.

To get any benefit from your watch's altimeter, you must calibrate it from time to time. Let's say before a hike you are at a certain point, the altitude of which is marked on the map. To calibrate, you need to enter the current altitude data into the device. And if the weather conditions are stable during the hike, you will be able to get more or less accurate altitude data.

Indicators for calibration can be obtained, for example, at the peaks (from pointers), from marks on the map or from a GPS navigator. By the way, a GPS navigator measures altitude more accurately, since the data depends only on satellites.

Digital compass

Could be a nice addition. But if you are lucky with a watch model where the compass will work correctly. Many users have complaints about this. To the point that the compass on the watch lies ninety degrees or shows the correct direction every other time!

Like any other digital compass, it cannot be 100% accurate, but it should determine the cardinal directions with minimal error. Before going on a hike, you definitely need to take control measurements of the direction, checking with a regular magnetic compass, or better yet, with two. Remember that the electronic compass does not display the result immediately, it takes some time (up to 30 seconds).

As for me, the presence of a digital compass in a watch is not at all mandatory. I wouldn't rely on it alone and would still recommend duplicating it with the good old magnetic analogue.

Thermometer

Measures ambient temperature. The indicators are quite accurate in most cases, but some features should be taken into account. Firstly, to correctly measure air temperature, the watch should be removed from your hand. Otherwise, the thermometer will “lie”, being influenced by body temperature. Secondly, the watch must lie down for at least 10 minutes to cool down and take on the air temperature.

A digital thermometer also requires calibration. And here you can use a little trick so as not to remove the watch from your hand every time. Go to a trusted source and calibrate the data directly on your hand, indicating the actual air temperature numbers. Or, empirically determine the difference between the indicators in the removed state and on the hand, and then, measuring the temperature on the hand, mentally subtract the resulting value. But these methods also have their drawbacks. The higher the air temperature, the stronger the body t influences the sensor, and at very low temperatures the opposite is true. It turns out that the previously obtained difference value may change. Conclusion: the watch still shows the most accurate temperature after “resting” a little from the hand.

Most often, a thermometer in a watch is capable of displaying a temperature range from -10°C to +60°C.

Sports buns

A separate segment is occupied by watches for an active lifestyle with a sports twist. Such devices can be equipped with a pedometer, calorie counter, heart rate monitor, etc. Quite useful functions, but if you are not involved in any kind of sports, then such functions are of no use on a hike.

Other features:

  • alarms/sounds
  • stopwatch/timer
  • rotating bezel
  • mineral glass
  • LED lights
  • displaying a table of tides and the age of the moon
  • display of sunrise and sunset
  • titanium strap
  • solar battery

In addition to those listed, manufacturers equip individual models with such unimaginable functions that they are unlikely to be useful to an ordinary tourist, for example, a clinometer (a device for measuring vertical angles). All these bells and whistles are quite specific and are designed for the most demanding customers.

Most of the features in modern travel watches are more of a nice-to-have addition than a necessity.

Manufacturers producing tourism watches

Watches for tourists are now produced by many companies, the model range is quite wide, and the price range is corresponding. The most popular brands of tourist watches:

Suunto(Finland). The company has been producing watches since 1936. It specializes in watches for tourism, mountaineering, diving and other activities. It produces very high quality, but expensive watches. Nice design.

Casio(Japan). One of the most popular companies. It has a very large tourist and diving line. Excellent price/quality ratio.

Tissot(Switzerland). A very cool brand with a corresponding price tag. They make watches with a metal case and sapphire glass, but there is a drawback - poor water resistance compared to other companies.

Polar(Finland). Decent watch, but it focuses on sports functions. Their niche is rather sports. But in addition to sports training, they are also great for hiking.

Timex(USA). They have many functions, good design for every taste.

Highgear(USA). Relatively inexpensive watches, but at the same time they have rich functionality.

Garmin(USA). The company is known for its GPS navigators, but also produces a line of sports and travel watches equipped with GPS receivers.

Many other companies also offer separate models of watches for extreme conditions, so the choice is actually simply huge.

Opinion

By and large, the main function of a watch is to display the time correctly, and any wrist device, even the cheapest, can handle this. But the life of a tourist involves staying in an aggressive environment and the influence of external factors on the device is inevitable. Therefore, it would be nice to have a mechanism that is protected from dust, water and shock.

Of course, each person has their own requirements. One will be satisfied with the time display and security, while the other will consider it mandatory for the watch to have modern navigation functions.

For myself personally, I have compiled the following list of minimum requirements: first of all, reliability, protection from water and damage, date display, stopwatch/timer, alarms, backlight. All other functions are optional options. At the same time, I don’t consider them superfluous, but it’s difficult to call them an absolute necessity.

Tell us in the comments what watch you use while hiking and why you love it. How much do you use the functionality of your watch and what functions are really useful on a hike?

Special watches are produced for lovers of active recreation that includes tourist travel. Their main difference is the increased emphasis on the accuracy and strength of the mechanism. In addition, it is important for travelers that the need to change the battery (if any) is not too frequent.

The Gadgets-reviews portal continues to tell its readers about “classic wearable gadgets” – wristwatches. We recently published a review of the best-selling men's watches on the planet. It's time to talk about sports chronometers. Fans of running and diving, tourists and extreme sports enthusiasts, as well as their wives and girlfriends - this article is for you!

It is clear that no watch will turn you into an athlete. But they can push a person towards a healthy lifestyle, make sports part of his “life style”. We started talking about lifestyle for a reason: in the 21st century, designers and marketers simply “turned” to the topic of sports! For some reason, the prefix “sports” turns almost any product into a bestseller. There is an increased demand for everything “healthy”, “useful” and “correct”.

This leads to another trend that also applies to sports watches for men. As a rule, in different sports devices the first place is not functionality, but design. Design is also important: you wouldn’t run around with a massive metal watch that rubs your wrist and looks like a hard day at the office?

This material contains chronometers for lovers of a healthy lifestyle: beautiful, functional, and comfortable. What sports watches do people buy more often and why?

Sports watches for men – what is it?

First, let’s remember what modern sports watches actually are. Why, after all, can’t sports enthusiasts run around and go clubbing with a classic Rolex? What do all Sports class models have in common: the simplest and most expensive, the brightest and most inconspicuous?

- Mostly electronic. It is not so easy to find a sports watch with a classic dial, on which the minute and hour hands run. Most often, their place is taken by ordinary electronic displays. All these angular dotted numbers, familiar to any of us from childhood. And the point here is far from being a matter of accuracy in measuring chronos. It’s just that in many sports you need to use a stopwatch and timer. Moreover, even tenths of a second can play an important role here! They need to be seen, felt, recorded. Unfortunately, the good old dial does not provide these capabilities. Another thing is the digital display. Here, at least measure hundredths of seconds!

- Indestructible. Waterproof Sports style always means freedom of movement, a bit of extreme sports, and a certain risk for the watch itself and its owners. I think that outdoor enthusiasts would go broke long ago if they only wore expensive, gold-plated watches. One hit and the glass is gone! One fall on the sports field - and the leather strap is erased into dust... It’s not for nothing that sports watches are made of plastic and rubber! It is these materials that guarantee their safety and long life. And the owner of such a watch costs a whole wallet and nerves.
By the way, add here such characteristics of a sports watch as moisture resistance (for fishermen and divers) and shock resistance.

- Lungs. It's nice to walk around the office, feeling the noble weight of a gift wristwatch on your hand. Especially if you feel this heaviness on the way to the director’s chair. But when a person sits behind the wheel of a bicycle or controls alpine skis... he needs completely different feelings. Ideally, there is no weight on the arm. Need a watch? You look at them. And at other times, the favorite chronometer should not distract its owner. That is why sports watch developers still do not stop searching for the ideal material for their creations. What kind of chemical alloys are not used to create straps and chronometer cases... Except they haven’t started using tissue paper yet;)

- Experiment with color and shape. Of course, you will never see scattered diamonds and gold plates on a sports watch. Well, perhaps on the watch of an Olympic champion or a Formula 1 winner. Athletic guys and girls stand out differently. More youthful and democratic tricks are being used. For example, a bright color - to match the color of your favorite sneakers or training jacket. Pink, light green, fuchsia, electric... the shelves of specialized stores are full of all the colors of the rainbow.

Innovative product shapes are also used, such as a barrel, an oval or an elongated ellipse... Unusual straps, fastenings, dials... The main thing is not to get too carried away in the search for a “sports shape”: such watches should be streamlined! Necessarily! This is also one of the most important rules of the industry we are studying. Still, convenience in sports is of paramount importance.

- Additional functions. Heart rate monitor and pedometer, stopwatch and timer, alarm clock and even a compass. All these goodies can decorate any sports watch. In any case, they will definitely raise their price. It’s not even about the benefits: at some point, any sports watch fan goes into “collector mode.” The more gizmos and gizmos your watch has, the cooler you are. This childish principle also works well on adults. And what? At least you can play with superheroes if you didn’t have time to have fun during your school years :)

Which of these qualities are most important to users? By what principles do buyers of other markets choose their products? You will find answers to these questions in the ranking of the best-selling sports chronometer models. So, who's in first place???
