Recently, flashing new smartphones produced by Xiaomi has become much more difficult. The manufacturer has blocked the ability to install third-party firmware without first unlocking the bootloader. At the same time, getting an unlock code is still a lottery. Only my third attempt was crowned with success, and not without certain manipulations. But there is a separate topic about this, dedicated to unlocking the bootloaders of all Xiaomi smartphones. Now let's talk specifically about Mi4s.

I have prepared a set of software tools that will allow you to do the following:

  1. unlocking the bootloader without submitting an application on the website unlock.mi.com;
  2. installing custom TWRP recovery;
  3. installing a localized firmware version;
  4. obtaining superuser rights.

Take into account! When installing a localized version of the firmware, it is recommended to first perform a factory reset. Therefore, worry about the safety of your files in advance. Before you begin any manipulations with your smartphone, make sure that the battery is charged more than 60%, in the best case it should be 100%. Everything you do is done at your own risk. I, as the author of this article, do not bear responsibility.

Before completing all tasks, download and unpack this archive to your PC, preferably to the root of drive C.

Unlocking the bootloader

On the computer, from the previously unpacked folder, run the first batch file 01_edl.bat, thereby transferring the smartphone to emergency download mode EDL (emergency download mode).

The smartphone screen will go dark, and a new Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM...) device should appear in the device manager. If this device is not there, then most likely you did not install the necessary drivers or the cable is faulty. You can find instructions for correctly installing drivers.

Launch the MiFlash application, indicate where the unlock folder is located and press the Refresh button. Also in the bottom line you need to check Flash all except data and storage so that all data on the smartphone remains intact. There should be the following picture except for the COM port number, you will have your own.

If you have an 8-digit alphanumeric expression in the Device cell, then you have not switched to EDL mode. If everything is like mine, then we move on to unlocking. To do this, click on the Flash button. After a couple of seconds, the gray stripe will turn green. This means that the bootloader has been successfully unlocked. We disconnect the smartphone from the PC and turn it on by long pressing the power button.

Installing custom TWRP recovery

Manually turn off the smartphone and put it in fastboot mode. To do this, simultaneously press the volume down and power buttons and do not release until Bunny the hare appears above the android. Connect the device to the PC.

Run the second batch file 02_twrp.bat and wait for the installation to complete.

After installation, the smartphone will automatically reboot into custom twrp recovery. We are not afraid of Chinese characters, but swipe to the right on the slider. Next, click on the third button in the right column and in the tab with the globe, find and select the language you need. Now you can flash any localized software on your smartphone.

Installing a localized firmware version

To install a localized version of the firmware, you must first download the firmware file in zip format to the smartphone memory. Personally, I give preference to the xiaomi.eu team. Their firmware is characterized by good stability and is not crammed with unnecessary software. You can download the version for developers with the Russian language from April 28 from my

Installation instructions

    Make backup copies of all necessary data and files and save them to your computer, removable media or cloud.

    Create a folder named “Android” in the root of the C:\ drive.

    Disable driver authentication.
    Windows 7
    When you turn on the computer, after loading the BIOS, you must press the F8 key. In the “Advanced boot options” menu that appears, select “Disable mandatory driver signing.” This method may not work the first time, so you should repeat the action or open a command prompt as an administrator and enter two commands:
    "bcdedit.exe /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS"
    "bcdedit.exe /set TESTSIGNING ON"
    Windows 8
    You need to press the Win+I key combination, hold down the Shift key and select “Shutdown” > “Restart”. When you turn on your computer, select Diagnostics > Advanced Options > Boot Options > Restart. When loading, select the “Disable mandatory driver signature verification” mode by pressing the F7 key.
    Windows 10
    You must hold down the Shift key and select the Start menu > Shutdown > Restart. After booting, select Troubleshooting > Advanced Options > Boot Options > Restart. Then select “Disable mandatory driver signature verification” by pressing F7.

    Download the official firmware for installation and unpack the archive into any folder.
    It is recommended to use the folder path without Cyrillic characters. For example, “C:\Android\firmware_name”.

    Activate the “USB Debugging” and “Factory Unlock” items on your smartphone in the “For Developers” section (located in “Settings” → “Advanced”).
    To open this section, you need to go to “Settings” → “About phone” and click on “MIUI version” several times.

    Connect the phone to the computer via a USB cable and change the connection type from “Charge only” to “File transfer (MTP)”.
    It is recommended to use an original or good quality cable, as well as the USB 2.0 port located on the motherboard (for PC).

    Open a command line and go to the created Android folder with the command “cd c:\Android\” (commands are written without quotes).

    Make sure that the computer finds the device via ADB.
    To do this, you need to enter “adb devices” into the command line. When a request appears on your phone for permission to debug via ADB on this computer, you must click “Ok” and select “Always allow from this computer.” If the device is visible, the text “List of devices attached” and a list of all devices (for example, xxxxxxx device) will be displayed. If instead of “device” it says “offline” or the list is empty, then you need to update ADB, check the drivers/cord, change the USB port/computer.

    Reboot your smartphone into Fastboot mode.
    To do this, you need to enter “adb reboot bootloader” in the command line or turn it off, then turn it on while holding down the Volume Down key. A hare wearing a hat with earflaps should appear on the screen.

    Make sure that the computer finds the device in Fastboot mode.
    To do this, enter the command “fastboot devices”. If the response is “xxxxxxx fastboot”, then the phone is connected correctly. If “waiting for device” or nothing at all is displayed, you need to check the status of the USB connection or reinstall the drivers.

    Launch the MiFlash utility. Then click the “Refresh” button, then “Browse...” and specify the path to the folder with the firmware. At the bottom of the screen, select “Flash all except storage” to save files in the device’s memory or “Flash all” to format the internal memory and press the “Flash” button. The firmware installation process will begin.

    After the operation is completed, the phone should reboot itself.
    If this does not happen, you need to enter “fastboot reboot” in the command line or hold down the Power button for 10 seconds until the Mi logo appears. The cable can now be disconnected. After a few minutes, the device will boot and be ready for further work.
