...
From an interview that a special correspondent for Harmont Radio took with Dr. Valentin Pilman on the occasion of the latter’s nomination for the second Nobel Prize in Physics in 20... year

So, Dr. Pillman, I would like to first of all congratulate you on your nomination. As I understand it, it is possible that you will become the fifth two-time Nobel Prize winner in the history of mankind. And this is well deserved. At one time I asked you if you would like to take a closer look at the wonderful objects that are found in the Visitation Zones. You answered “Perhaps” - and this is the result, the second Nobel Prize. Your explorations in all six Zones are truly...

Let's do without praises. Firstly, from the nomination for the award to its presentation is approximately the same as from the Earth to the alpha constellation Cygnus. And secondly, I personally believe that almost all of my research is not worth a dime. We still do not know the true reason for the appearance of Zones on our planet. We have no idea what all these “empties”, “witch’s jellies”, “black splashes” and other mysterious objects that we scientists call “material” and whose mystery we have been struggling with for many years now actually are. At the same time, scientists around the world have not yet received a single clear answer to a bunch of questions related to them. Yes, we use these artifacts for the benefit of humanity, some of them have even learned to clone, but what they are and where they came from is still a mystery.

You're probably kidding, doctor. Awards of this level are not awarded just like that.

Don't make me laugh, young man. I have devoted my entire life to science and, at least, I have learned to objectively evaluate the results of my research. So, I believe that we still do not know anything about the Zones. Nothing, except that they are deadly and, like fields poisoned by radiation, regularly bring in crops in the form of strange objects, many of which are deadly to humans.

Well, dear Harmontians, I think you don’t need to be reminded of our doctor’s phenomenal modesty, which is equal to his achievements in science. By the way, could you explain to our listeners what you meant when you spoke about the harvest that the Zones regularly bring? Aren't artifacts items left behind after Visits in contaminated lands?

Exactly. When the first explorers crossed the boundaries of the Zones, they stumbled upon these very artifacts. And, naturally, they dragged them with them. Since then this process has continued continuously. According to statistics, both scientists and stalkers together took about five thousand artifacts from six Zones scattered across the planet in the first year after the Visit. Currently, this figure has risen to fifty to sixty thousand per year. It seems that the more mysterious objects are taken out of the Zones, the more there are of them.

Amazing fact, amazing numbers. Mr. Pilman, and yet, could you at least slightly lift the veil of secrecy for our listeners? What do you think is the reason that no matter how many artifacts are taken out of the Visitation Zones, they are reborn again in even greater quantities? At least a guess?

At the very least, it is unreasonable and fundamentally unprofessional to point a finger at the sky without at least the slightest objective clues. Therefore, let me be deprived of a nomination for the award, but I will answer honestly - I don’t know. I don’t have the slightest idea why artifacts in the Zones multiply from year to year, like mushrooms after radioactive rain. And I’m unlikely to be able to please you with the solution to this riddle in the near future, since over the years of our research we have not even come an inch closer to it. As, indeed, with many other inexplicable mysteries that the Visitation Zones present to us almost every day.

Blind neighborhoods

I took a deep sip from my glass, raked out a bunch of change from my pocket, got off the stool, and the first thing I did was turn the jukebox on full blast. There is one such song there - “Don’t come back if you’re not sure.” It has a very good effect on me after the Zone...

Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. "Roadside Picnic"

If you think about it carefully, our life is pretty similar to a “dummy”. There are two noticeable moments in it, as bright as the polished copper saucers of a famous artifact, which is also called a “hydromagnetic trap” or “object seventy-seven-be.”

The first is when you are born, and a spot of light in the shape of such a saucer looms in front of you.

And the last one is when you die. The stalkers who were on the verge, but returned, said that they saw a sparkling tunnel. Well, in general, the topic is well known.

And between these saucers - nothing. Emptiness. At least stick your hand in there, even your very smart head. It's still empty there. And what you are trying to fill that void with is temporary and does not matter. For a “dummy” for sure.

But there are exceptions.

This is when you are incredibly lucky and you find “object seventy-seven.” Also a “pacifier”, only full, with some kind of blue filling inside, shimmering majestically, with meaning. It seems that if you take a closer look, you will grasp something very important for yourself, you will comprehend the meaning of existence, you will understand why you live in this world...

Many people looked. They shoved litmus papers. Then hands. Even the heads. No one understood what kind of light there was. Well, it sways, well, it shimmers. And nothing more. There is no special meaning in it and no fundamental difference from ordinary emptiness. In general, everything is like in life. There is only one alluring light, but in reality - nothing.

And Kirill Panov gave his life for a “complete dummy”. For a dream. For the radiance that is of no use. And if it weren’t for me, Red Shewhart, the red-haired stalker from Harmont, this scientist would have lived in the world now, tinkered with artifacts, and been happy. And Archie would live. And many more people who are no longer in the world.

I wonder if there's anyone in Harmont who doesn't want Red Shewhart dead? Maybe not. But, one way or another, you need to do what is planned. And then - at least the grass won’t grow...

* * *

A man walked through the city, chasing sad thoughts in his head. He could be understood. Since the Zone settled on the outskirts of Harmont, the city resembled a patient whose doctors found a benign tumor. There seems to be nothing wrong, you live for yourself, mind your own business. But at the same time, you constantly remember that there is a piece of reborn flesh in you, which seems to be like yours, but at the same time is not. And which can become malignant at any moment.

And recently the tumor made itself felt, making the body happy with unheard-of grace for every resident of Harmont. And then the doctors attacked the city. Because happiness for one and all is a contagious thing, which if it spreads to other organisms, then it will already be an epidemic. A terrible disease that can only be treated with healing nuclear mushrooms.

And now, in order to prevent radical measures, Kharmont and the zone adjacent to it were conscientiously surrounded by three rows of barbed wire, a cordon reinforced with machine gun towers, checkpoints and armored personnel carriers. Well, of course, the military was herded into the city - darkness and darkness. Your eyes are full of camouflages, stripes and weapons of various sizes. True, there is no one to shoot at. People leave their houses only for free soup, which the military in chemical protection distributes right on the streets from field kitchens attached to armored cars. And all this is called “temporary measures related to the increased danger of the Zone for the civilian population.”

Redrick Shewhart wished “happiness for everyone, freely, and let no one leave offended.” But his desire turned into great grief for the residents of Harmont. The city is cordoned off by military units, fenced off from the rest of the world with barbed wire. People with signs of mutations are sent to laboratories for scientific research. And, on top of that, in the ruins of the old plant, one of the most mysterious anomalies of the Zone, “Tramp Dick,” has again become active, threatening to throw the transcendent horror of another world into the human world.

But not only invincible evil comes from the other world. A “brother of death” appears in the Harmont Zone, a stalker named Sniper. Mortally wounded, but undefeated... Can he survive and help Shewhart return the citizens of Harmont to their city? A difficult question, and a very difficult task even for experienced stalkers. After all, their powerful enemy had long ago decided that only one fate awaited the disobedient: no one would leave the Zone alive.
