On May 23, 2017, from 9:00 Moscow time, the Android Pay payment system will be available in Russia. It has existed since September 2015, Russia became the 11th region in which the system started working. Here it is available to clients of more than 10 banks who use Visa and Mastercard cards.

What is Android Pay for?

Android Pay is a contactless payment system that allows you to link a regular bank card to the application, and then use the service on a smartphone or smart watch to pay for goods and services. In addition, you can use it to pay in applications on mobile devices (for example, Uber).

The technology allows you not to carry all your bank cards with you, replacing them with one application on your smartphone. Android Pay does not charge a commission to the user - the amount indicated on the receipt is debited from the buyer's account.

What cards can be connected to Android Pay

At launch in Russia, Android Pay works with more than ten banks. This list includes:

  • "Alfa Bank";
  • Ak Bars Bank;
  • "Binbank" (at the time of launch only MasterCard);
  • "VTB 24";
  • "MTS-Bank";
  • Otkritie (including Rocketbank and Tochka);
  • Promsvyazbank (at the time of launch only MasterCard);
  • Raiffeisenbank;
  • Rosselkhozbank;
  • “Russian Standard” (at the time of launch only MasterCard);
  • "Sberbank";
  • Tinkoff Bank;
  • "Yandex.Money" (MasterCard only).

This list will expand in the future.

Which devices is Android Pay available on?

Android Pay can be connected to devices with an NFC chip that run Android KitKat (4.4) and later - Lollipop (5.0, 5.1), Marshmallow (6.0) and Nougat (7.0, 7.1).

An important condition is that the device must have official firmware installed, and must not have root rights and the bootloader must not be unlocked. Typically, these actions are performed when changing the firmware.

How to connect a card to Android Pay

To use Android Pay, you need to download the application of the same name from the Google Play Store. Some Russian users had access to it back in early May 2017.

When you first launch the Android Pay application, you will be prompted to connect a card - to do this, you need to either point the camera at it so that the service reads the number and expiration date, or enter the information manually. You will also need the CVV code on the back of the card and the user's address. When connecting the card, the bank will send a verification code to confirm the operation.

If the user has already connected cards to his Google account (for example, to pay in an app store), then Android Pay will offer to use one of them - to link to the application, you will only need to enter the CVV code.

Where and how to pay via Android Pay

Payment via Android Pay is available almost everywhere where there are terminals that support contactless payments (including through cards with PayPass and PayWave technologies). We are talking about terminals, which are indicated by similar symbols:

In Russia, such terminals are available in almost every retail chain - Azbuka Vkusa, Pyaterochka, Perekrestok, Karusel, Magnit, OK, Eldorado, H&M, Starbucks, KFC, Burger King", "Teremok", "Doubleby", "Rosneft", "Bashneft" and so on. By the end of 2017, Sberbank, which services 1.1 million terminals, promises to add the possibility of contactless payment to all its devices.

To pay for goods and services, you need to “wake up” the device with the Android Pay application and bring it to the terminal for a few seconds. If the operation is successful, a message about this and an image of the card used will appear on the screen.

In some cases, the cashier may ask you to enter a PIN or sign a receipt. This depends on the settings of the bank that issued the card and the terminal. As a rule, in Russia, when making contactless payments, you need to enter a PIN code for transactions amounting to more than 1,000 rubles.

Android Pay allows you to carry out three transactions in a row without unlocking the phone for an amount of up to 1000 rubles each; on the fourth, the user will need to unlock the phone using a pattern or fingerprint. The transaction “counter” is reset if the user has unlocked the phone between them.

If the user has connected several cards, then one of them will need to be selected as the standard one, which will be used by default. To use another card, before paying, you need to open the application and select the desired card - if necessary, it can be designated as standard for the future.

How to pay with Android Pay in apps and websites

Android Pay can also be used to pay for purchases in some mobile apps and websites via the mobile version of Google Chrome. In such cases, the “Pay via Android Pay” button will appear on the payment page.

In some services (for example, Uber), you can use Android Pay as one of the permanent means of payment. At the start of the system in Russia, the service will be available in Lamoda, OneTwoTrip, Rambler/Kassa and Afisha, and later will appear in Delivery Club, Kinokhod, Ozon, Yandex.Taxi and other applications.

Recently, the popularity of various services that allow you to make payments using smartphones has been steadily growing. Therefore, many are starting to look for a gadget with NFC, because without it, payments in this way are impossible. Until recently, this sensor was the prerogative of only expensive devices, but today the situation does not look so sad. Even people with limited funds can buy a gadget in order to enjoy the delights of the system. Let's look at the top five best inexpensive phones with NFC on board.

1. Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016)

Although this Korean smartphone was released a long time ago, it remains desirable to this day. Its appearance is very stylish and elegant due to the Gorilla Glass 4 panel on the back, an attractive metal frame, and a thickness of only 7.3 mm. The model turned out to be balanced, for this reason it won considerable love from buyers. The chic 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display, the format of which is Full HD, immediately attracts the eye. Everything inside the smartphone is at a decent level for its price. There was room inside for a processor Exynos 7580 Octa up to 1.6 GHz with sufficient performance for ordinary tasks. The device is equipped with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage, which can be increased if desired, since there is a microSD slot. It is also decorated with a powerful camera with f/1.9 aperture and 13 megapixel resolution. They didn’t forget about optical stabilization, which many more expensive products don’t even have. But the most important thing is that the Koreans were not greedy here to install an NFC sensor. In addition to Android Pay, the smartphone can also work with Samsung Pay. The user has a choice. The phone ran on Android 5.1, but was updated to “seven”, which is also a plus. The Korean “old-timer” is powered by a 2900 mAh battery.

2.Moto G5s

The joint brainchild of Motorola and Lenovo looks extremely interesting due to the ratio of price and internal filling. Model G5s will attract connoisseurs of the pure version of Android 7.1. Such people will also be pleased with the plans to soon update the model to . But this is not the only thing the device can be proud of. The design here is simple, but nevertheless pleasant. The smartphone is “dressed” in metal, inside there is a Snapdragon 430 chipset with 8 cores at 1.5 GHz, as well as memory modules - 32 GB of ROM and 3 GB of RAM, there is a cell for microSD. The good thing about the inexpensive “Motor” is its 5.2-inch Full HD screen, made using IPS technology. It is covered with Gorilla Glass 3. The camera is equipped with a 16 megapixel sensor and f/2.0 aperture. The usual list of interfaces has been supplemented with an NFC module, which is a very useful bonus. The phone's battery life depends on a 3000 mAh battery.

3. Sony Xperia XA1

You can treat Sony brand devices in any way, however, one fact is undeniable - Japanese products have their own unique charm. They are not like everyone else, and this is precisely why they win many over to their side. Yes and model XA1 acquired a signature tiled design with wide margins below and above the screen. The strong point of the smartphone is the screen, which is practically frameless on the sides; it looks impressive. Although the body is made of plastic, it is very pleasant to the touch, and the device does not seem cheap. The front panel is crowned with a 5-inch screen with an IPS matrix of modest HD resolution. The hardware platform of the affordable Sonya came from MediaTek, or rather Helio P20 up to 2.3 GHz. This fact is not to everyone’s liking, but largely because of this, the device is inexpensive. According to memory, the situation is as follows - 3 GB of RAM, as well as 32 GB of ROM memory. A slot for microSD is offered. The device also stands out for its photographic capabilities, because it has a high-resolution rear camera and a 23-megapixel sensor. The manufacturer did not forget about the important NFC module, so the payment procedure with a smartphone is possible. The only negative point is the battery, because its power is very small - 2300 mAh.

4.Huawei Nova

This is perhaps one of the most elegant smartphones for the money. Lovers of beautiful things will not pass by it; the aluminum body is elegant and very thin. Oddly enough, the first generation of the Nova model is not only not inferior to the second, but also superior to it. For unknown reasons, Huawei deprived the device of the NFC module this year. In light of this, the original one began to look extremely tempting, since, firstly, it has become cheaper, and, secondly, it is equipped with NFC. In addition, last year’s device was built on “stone” Snapdragon 625 with 8 cores up to 2 GHz, characterized by good energy efficiency and performance sufficient for many. The device is equipped with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB ROM, and you can connect a memory card. The device is compact due to the use of a 5-inch diagonal IPS display. High picture clarity is achieved thanks to Full HD resolution. The phone takes pictures with a 12-megapixel main camera with an aperture value of f/2.2. The software runs on Android 6.0.1 with EMUI 4.1 shell. A 3020 mAh battery is responsible for the longevity of the gadget.

5.Nokia 5

The device is controversial, but worthy for its low price due to the characteristics it offers. It also has an NFC sensor, for which it can only be praised. The smartphone with the legendary logo is equipped with a well-built metal body in the style of the latest devices from the brand. Many people like pure Android, and this is exactly what makes this model different. It runs Android 7.1.1 without any skins. Phone built on Snapdragon 430 Octa, there are 16 GB of flash memory and 2 GB of RAM available - the required minimum. The “five” has a 5.2-inch screen with HD resolution. On the back there is a 13 megapixel photo module with an aperture of f/2.0. The case has a built-in battery with a resource of 3000 mAh.

The Android Pay mobile payment service has finally appeared in Russia. It should be noted that it came to our country almost six months late compared to the rapidly gaining momentum of the Apple service and its Korean counterpart.
According to the basic principles of operation, Android Pay is practically no different from its competitors. This contactless service also requires that the phone runs on Android OS 4.4 or higher, and also supports the NFC function.

Of the devices available on the market today, the list of supported devices is small. These are mainly the latest models of phones in the top and mid-range price range. Among them are Samsung Galaxy (A3,A5,A7,J5,J7,S7,S8), Xiaomi Mi5, LG(K6,G3s,G4s), Huawei Honor and Sony Xperia in the price category of over 12 thousand rubles. Unfortunately, on popular inexpensive phones like Samsung Galaxy J1, Asus ZenFone Go, Meizu, HighScreen, Dexp, Phillips. Over time, support will appear on cheaper devices, but older models, of course, will not work.

The main difference between Android Pay and competing payment systems Apple Pay and Sansung Pay is that for the service to work, the smartphone does not need to have a fingerprint scanner and you can authorize using the good old PIN code or graphic password.

In addition, it works on all terminals with contactless payment. No additional protocol support is required.
Well, another significant plus is that you can use Android Pay to pay for purchases of applications and content on Google Play.

Which banks does Android Pay support?

The Android Pay payment system went live in Russia on May 23, 2017, and at the time of launch it works perfectly with both MasterCard cards and Visa, which is more familiar to Russia. The electronic payment system “Yandex.Money” is supported, and new cards of the “Mir” system should also be operational in the near future.
Currently 14 banks are supported:
— Sberbank
- Alfa Bank
— BinBank
- VTB 24
- Opening
— MTS-Bank
— Promsvyazbank
— Raiffeisenbank
— Rocketbank
— Rosselkhozbank
— Tinkoff
- Russian standard
- AK Bars
- Dot
In the near future, the list of counterparties will expand significantly.

How to install Android Pay on your phone

The application installation procedure is simple and no different from other applications. Go to Google Play and find the program:

Click the “Install” button and wait until the program is installed.

Then go to the phone settings and in the “WiFi and networks” section select “More”.

Here you need to check the NFC box. At the same time, the Android Beam function, which is responsible for data transfer, is also activated.
That's it, now you can use the application.

Attention! You won't be able to use the Android Pay program if your phone's bootloader is unlocked and rooted. The error “Android Pay is not supported on this device” will appear. It looks like this:

True, I came across information on forums that the restriction was circumvented, but I was unable to come across any real examples.

Is it safe?

In fact, using Android Pay on your phone is much safer than its counterparts from Apple and Samung, although their security is at the highest level. When you bring your smartphone to the terminal, a special one-time key 16 characters long is transmitted via a wireless radio channel. This is a so-called token that is generated in the Google cloud and comes over the Internet connection. That is, they are not generated on the device itself.

You can, of course, use the service without an active connection to the World Wide Web, but then the phone will use the keys stored in its memory. Also, a telephone number and information about which payment network is used - MasterCard, Visa or World - are transmitted to the terminal. No data about the card itself is sent.

How to add a card

Launch the program and click on the “Add credit or debit card” button. Then you need to point the camera at your card and take a photo of it for the application to read the data. Next, you will need to manually enter the CVC code (on the back of the card) and the owner’s address. Next, you will need to go through verification at the bank and enter the code received via SMS.

You can add a card to Google Android Pay several times. In this case, you will need to specify the one that will be used by default.

How to use Android Pay to pay

In order to pay for purchases using a phone connected to the Android Pay service, you just need to unlock the phone and bring it to a terminal that supports contactless payment. They are usually indicated by the following stickers:

Note: In modern supermarkets, large retail chains such as Magnit, Auchan, Perekrestok, Karusel and other chain companies, most of the old terminals have already been replaced with modern ones that can make contactless payments. Including PayPass.

The Google payment system has another convenient function - online payment for purchases on the Internet through a web browser. That is, if you need to buy something, you press a button and voila - payment has been made! In the future, a similar button will be integrated into other applications. For example, now it is already available in Yandex.Taxi, Uber, Wildberries.

It is possible to use Android Pie using a smart watch. But again, they must support NFC technology. For example, Samsung Gear S3, Huawei Watch 2, LG Wath Sport. The second requirement is that the operating system must be updated to Android Wear 2.0.

That week Android Pay launched, and we decided to prepare a selection of inexpensive smartphones (up to 30 thousand rubles) that can be purchased to use the new payment service. In fact, companies often skimp on such little things as the NFC module, so finding such smartphones is not so easy.

Huawei nova

The compact and beautiful Huawei nova can please you with an excellent display, small dimensions, pleasant body materials (aluminum and glass) and, of course, an NFC module. Android Pay support will be the icing on the cake for this well-balanced smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy A5 2017

A strong player in the middle segment from Samsung. The Galaxy A5 2017 has everything you need for comfortable use: a good camera, a high-quality SuperAMOLED display with FHD resolution, a beautiful glass body with a metal edge, and IP68 waterproofing. The device has support for Android Pay and Samsung Pay and is currently one of the most interesting offers in its price segment.

Wileyfox Swift 2X

The most inexpensive device in our selection today, but at the same time it does not become any worse. In fact, Swift 2 is an excellent offer for those who are looking for a pure Android device with FHD resolution and NFC support for 10-12 thousand rubles.

Asus ZenFone 2 Deluxe

The premium version of last year's flagship is still relevant in terms of characteristics and no less relevant in price. Now ZenFone 2 Deluxe can be bought for 20 thousand rubles. For this money you will get a smartphone with an unusual design, a good display, average operating time, functional ZenUI and, of course, an NFC module for Android Pay.

Xiaomi Mi 5s

One of the inexpensive devices with an excellent size-performance ratio. Usually compact devices do not indulge in top-end specs, but this is not the case with the Mi 5s: a powerful chipset from Qualcomm, an excellent display, tapered edges, an aluminum body, convenient MIUI and the ability to pay using NFC. However, keep in mind that the option will not work on rooted devices and with an unlocked bootloader.

Lenovo P2

Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, FHD resolution, SuperAMOLED matrix and, of course, enormous operating time provided by a capacious 5100 mAh battery. This is, in principle, one of the very current devices in its price segment, and the presence of NFC makes it even more attractive.

ZTE Axon 7 Mini

The compact version of ZTE's music flagship also features a sleek, neat design, a dedicated sound chip and stereo speakers. The older version of the Axon 7 Mini also received a full-fledged NFC module.

At 9 am on May 23, 2017. From now on, almost all smartphone users can use mobile payment services: Apple Pay is available on the iPhone, Samsung Galaxy flagships and A-series smartphones support Samsung Pay, devices with NFC on Android 4.4 and higher support Android Pay.

The principle is almost the same on all devices. You need to set the lock with a password or fingerprint scanner, download or launch the pre-installed payment service application, provide card details, enter the verification code from SMS and agree to the user agreement. After this, you can pay for purchases with your smartphone. However, with a similar setup procedure, each of the three payment services has certain features.

WHAT DEVICES ARE SUPPORTED

Everything is clear with smartphones, but what about supporting mobile payment services on other devices?

Android Pay works on smartphones with NFC running Android 4.4 and higher. In addition, the service is available to users of smartwatches running Android Wear 2.0.

Samsung Pay works on Galaxy flagships and A-series smartphones, as well as on Samsung Gear S3 smartwatches:
Samsung Galaxy S8 | S8+
Samsung Galaxy S7 edge | S7
Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+
Samsung Galaxy S6 | S6 Edge (NFC only)
Samsung Galaxy Note5
Samsung Galaxy A7 (2017) | A5 (2017) | A3 (2017)
Samsung Galaxy A7 (2016) | A5 (2016)
Samsung Gear S3 classic | frontier

Apple Pay works on iPhone smartphones, Apple Watch smart watches, as well as iPad tablets and MacBook Pro laptops with Touch Bar:
iPhone SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and later
iPad (5th generation), iPad Pro, iPad mini 3 and later, iPad Air 2
Apple Watch, Apple Watch Series 1, Apple Watch Series 2
MacBook Pro with Touch ID
Mac 2012 or later paired with an iPhone that supports Apple Pay or Apple Watch

WHERE CAN I PAY?

When you use a mobile payment service, the first question in the store is: “can I pay here with a smartphone, or do I need to get my wallet and card?”

Android Pay and Apple Pay can only be used on terminals that support contactless payment. You can identify them in three ways: there may be stickers with the corresponding icons at the checkout; at the top of some contactless payment terminals there is a row of diodes; the message “attach card” appears on the terminal display.

Samsung Pay can be used on any terminal, regardless of whether it supports contactless payment. If available, NFC technology is used, otherwise payment is made using MST, a proprietary magnetic stripe emulation technology.

PAYMENT MECHANICS

Bring your smartphone to the terminal and confirm the operation? As easy as pie! However, each payment service has its own characteristics.

If you need to pay for a purchase up to a thousand rubles, just turn on the smartphone screen and bring it to the terminal. There is no need to confirm the action with a fingerprint or password. After three transactions, the payment will have to be confirmed, or the smartphone will have to be unlocked to reset the counter. At first glance, this is not very safe, but 3,000 rubles is not a very large amount that can be debited from the account by third parties who have gained access to the device, and transactions that take place without entering a PIN code are easily disputed in banks. Purchases worth more than a thousand rubles using Android Pay occur as in other payment services: on the device you need to confirm the operation with a fingerprint or enter a password, and on the terminal you need to enter the card PIN code.

When using Samsung Pay and Apple Pay, all transactions must be confirmed with a fingerprint or password, and if the amount is more than 1000 rubles, you must additionally enter the card PIN code at the terminal.

PAYMENT WITHOUT INTERNET

Can't get a mobile connection or have you turned off data transfer while roaming? Not all payment services will behave the same.

To maintain Android Pay functionality, your smartphone requires a periodic connection to the Internet. This payment service does not require a separate data chip in smartphones, so payment user information is not stored on the device, and unique tokens for transactions are generated on the server. Without an Internet connection, you can use Android Pay for a limited period (at the time of publication there is no exact information about the duration) and make no more than six transactions.

Samsung Pay and Apple Pay store user data on a special chip that has the highest level of protection. All payment transactions occur directly on the device, so an Internet connection is not required for payment.

PAYMENT IN APPLICATIONS AND ON SITES

What to do if you want to go shopping while lying on the couch and not get up to get your wallet with a bank card? There is a way out, but not for everyone.

Android Pay and Apple Pay, as components of the platform, offer users the ability to pay for purchases through applications from Google Pay and the App Store. In addition, these services have the ability to pay for purchases in the browser.

Samsung Pay is a little behind in this regard. However, at the end of March, Samsung Electronics entered into a strategic partnership with Visa, and by the end of the year, Samsung Pay users will have the opportunity to make purchases in online stores around the world that work with the Visa Checkout service.

AVAILABILITY OF ALTERNATIVES

Your neighbor’s grass is always greener (and there are bonuses when new payment services are launched), so you probably want to try something different now.

Returning to the fact that Android Pay and Apple Pay are parts of the platform, for the majority of users these services will be the only ones. The only exception will be if the device manufacturer develops an additional payment service, for example Samsung, Xiaomi, LG.

Samsung Pay users can switch to Android Pay at any time. It makes sense to do this only in the next month, when there are bonuses like . In the future, Samsung Pay will be more convenient for Galaxy smartphone users due to its greater versatility and combination of NFC and MST technologies.
