Ice or no ice? Review and testing of the Highscreen Alpha Ice smartphone. Plastic "iPhone" on Android

Today, there are many companies that provide the Russian market with their developments in the world of mobile devices, because modern society is literally mired in electronic devices and has completely enveloped itself in these spells. Top companies offer customers gadgets at inflated prices, but this does not mean that these devices are not bought, on the contrary, they are very popular, but we should not forget about the budget device market, which is also saturated with excellent devices. Recently, our laboratory received a new smartphone from the company HighScreen, which managed to create something new and unusual - this is a stylish Alpha Ice smartphone, which can be a pretty good competitor to many models on the budget mobile device market.

Our laboratory has already tested many interesting models of mobile devices, but HighScreen Alpha Ice managed to attract special attention; it is a truly interesting smartphone model, which even somewhat resembles the so popular iPhone.

Characteristics of HighScreen Alpha Ice

  • MediaTek MT6589 quad-core processor (1.2 GHz)
  • RAM/ROM - 1GB/4GB
  • OS - Android 4.2
  • Cameras - 13 MP and 3 MP
  • 4.7-inch IPS screen
  • Battery - 2000 mAh
Its light weight, excellent design, and fairly reasonable price for the Russian market can attract a very large number of buyers. So, let's start getting acquainted in more detail with the new offspring of the HighScreen company - Alpha Ice.

Availability of HighScreen Alpha Ice

This smartphone model will cost its customers approximately 11,000 rubles, which, of course, cannot be called the most attractive price, but if you compare prices on the Russian market, then this is an ideal option.

HighScreen Alpha Ice package

The smartphone arrives on store shelves in a very attractive package, and there is a small surprise hidden inside:
  • HighScreen Alpha Ice itself
  • Charger
  • Headset
  • Operating instructions and warranty card
  • And most importantly - a spare back cover (the set includes 2 types of back covers, black and white)

Appearance of HighScreen Alpha Ice

The device, as we have already said, has a very attractive design; from my own experience, I will say that some friends even initially confused it with the famous iPhone, which is extremely popular.

On the front panel there is a 4.7-inch IPS display, sensors and a 3 MP camera.

At the back you can see a 13 megapixel camera with autofocus and dual LED flash. The speaker is also located here.

Only the headset input is located on the top edge of the device.
On the bottom edge of the smartphone there is a power connector and a microphone.

The left side is completely smooth, while the right side has an on/off button and a volume rocker.

Hidden under the back cover are two slots for SIM cards (it should be noted that one of them is mini), a memory card slot and a non-removable 2000 mAh battery.

HighScreen Alpha Ice display

The smartphone was controlled by an IPS matrix with a diagonal of 4.7 inches and a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. The screen is very pleasing to the eyes, and the viewing angles are simply gorgeous. You really get the impression that you are holding in your hands an expensive smartphone model from top companies.

HighScreen Alpha Ice filling

The smartphone is equipped with a 4-core MediaTek MT6589 processor with a clock frequency of 1.2 GHz, which is already familiar to our laboratory. Power VR SGX 544MP is responsible for the graphics, which means that the owners of this smartphone will be able to not only enjoy games where you need to collect coins, but also play more demanding games, for example, GTA or RS3.

There is 1GB of RAM, which is basically enough for smartphones. Of course, there is not much internal memory, only 4 GB, but it can be increased using a micro SD card up to 32 GB.

Camera HighScreen Alpha Ice

As for the cameras that are installed on this smartphone, everything is very good. The 3MP front camera should satisfy many users, and the 13MP main camera will please many who like to take high-quality pictures and various videos.

The camera settings are familiar to the eye and there is hardly any need to pay attention here.

Video recording

HighScreen Alpha Ice Battery

There is a 2000 mAh battery installed here, which is basically enough for a day of normal use (listening to music, surfing the Internet and making calls), but if you put a lot of pressure on it, the battery will run out in about 5-7 hours.

Communication HighScreen Alpha Ice

The smartphone supports two SIM cards, but the problem is that one of them is mini, and many users may not like this. It is not clear why they should make one large and the other small, since they have already made them, let them be the same. There are practically no complaints about the quality of communication, however, there was a case when at a banquet this smartphone completely stopped receiving the network, but it is unlikely that the smartphone was to blame for this; most likely, there were some kind of signal jammers there.

Software HighScreen Alpha Ice

Android 4.2 OS is on board. I was especially pleased that the smartphone did not have a bunch of programs installed that are really not needed for ordinary users. However, there are also useful things, among them I would like to note a very useful service that they provided to their fans, this is 4Sync, a 15 GB cloud storage where you can store your information and use it at any time, be it from a computer or from a phone.

The Highscreen Alpha Ice smartphone is a mid-price device with an excellent design and support for two SIM cards. It was developed by the Russian company Vobis, which is gradually becoming a technological leader in the global mobile device market. One of the most notable attributes of the device is a powerful 13 megapixel camera with a very bright flash. The Highscreen Alpha Ice smartphone is equipped with an FM radio module, like many other models of this class. Experts praise this modern phone for its superior performance, not only in comparison with devices in its class, but also in comparison with devices in the premium segment.

It is interesting that many experts note the similarity of the design elements (as well as the level of performance) of the Highscreen Alpha Ice smartphone not so much with devices of the same class and platform, but with a device from the camp of “ideological” opponents of Android smartphones - with the iPhone itself, version 5. What exactly caused such surprising associations among experts?

Box Contents

The device comes with a short user manual, a battery charging unit, a wire for connecting via a simple configuration and a spare white rear panel. There are no other devices or components in the box. Owners of Highscreen Alpha Ice will not have any problems purchasing additional accessories - a case, more advanced headphones, spare wires - all this can be bought at any communication store. Experts note the successful design and material of the packaging itself: it is made in blue and black shades and is made of high-quality cardboard with a fairly dense structure.

iPhone in Russian?

According to many experts, the closeness of the device to the iPhone 5 can be seen already at the design level. Some experts allow themselves some irony, saying that it would be more appropriate to talk not so much about the similarities between the Russian and Apple concepts, but about their differences.

Highscreen Alpha Ice, reviews of which are mostly positive and are found not only in the Russian-speaking segment of the Internet, but also on Western resources, is seen by experts and users as a worthy competitor to the Apple device. Owners involuntarily notice that there are essentially few differences. One of the things that clearly catches your eye is the absence of the signature Home key, which the iPhone 5 has, as well as its dimensions. Even the edging around the body brings the design solutions of the two devices closer together. True, experts note that the back panel of the smartphone from Vobis even looks too “budgetary”. If you open the cover of the phone case, you will see several connectors at once: for SIM cards (regular and mini), as well as for MicroSD flash memory. By the way, the kit includes two covers - black (with a matte surface) and white (smooth). They can be changed to suit your clothing style.

Originality of the concept

The main part of the smartphone's controls is located on the right side of the body. This configuration is quite unusual for such devices, but experts consider its use a successful find. So, on the right there is a key for adjusting the sound level, a power button (and at the same time activating the display). There is not a single key or connector on the left side of the case. The smartphone is equipped with only two external connectors - for micro-USB and headphones. Below the screen there are three standard touch buttons: “Back”, “Menu”, “Home”. All of them have elegant backlighting in blue and white tones.

There is also an LED on the case that signals various events (missed signal, low battery, etc.) in different colors. The build quality of the case (although it is plastic, like most budget smartphones) is assessed by experts as very high.

Screen

The display of the Highscreen Alpha Ice is quite large - 4.7 inches. Its resolution is 720 x 1280 pixels. Matrix technology - IPS. The screen is covered with a durable layer of glass. All these technological features ensure the highest picture quality, regardless of the angle at which the user looks at the Highscreen Alpha Ice screen. The display, experts believe, should be a special source of pride for device owners. Even in this parameter, the Russian smartphone is comparable to the iPhone, the level of technology of the screen of which is beyond doubt. The Highscreen Alpha Ice touchscreen, like most similar devices, supports the multi-tap function. You can watch movies on the screen in modern 16:9 format. Experts note that there is no layer of air between the protective glass and the display matrix. According to experts, it is largely thanks to this solution that high picture quality and fairly large viewing angles are achieved. Of course, the IPS matrix also plays a role here, which is more technologically advanced than its predecessors (we are talking about TN, TFT, although even these have their advantages).

"Iron"

The chipset installed in the phone is MT 6589. The processor is Cortex version A7. The video subsystem is controlled by the SGX 544MP module. The phone's RAM capacity is 1 GB. Available built-in flash memory is 1.4 GB (additional modules up to 32 GB are supported). Testing the performance of the smartphone has proven that this modern device can cope with the technical tasks assigned to it.

The phone, as proven by specialist research, easily launches applications, provides the necessary smoothness of movement between different windows, and copes well with games, including those that are usually classified as “heavy”. Many users, having read the review made by experts after testing Highscreen Alpha Ice, say that the obtained indicators correspond to reality. Smartphone owners can launch games and applications without any problems. The phone works incredibly stable even under conditions of increased load on the hardware.

Battery

The battery capacity of the device is quite modest - only 2 thousand mAh. With average intensity of use, the battery life of a smartphone is about a day. Some users say that if you use the device sparingly, you can recharge it no more than once every two days. Users who leave reviews after using Highscreen Alpha Ice tend to rate the battery life of their smartphone as quite sufficient for themselves. Most device owners do not see the need to recharge the battery more than once a day.

Camera

The Highscreen Alpha Ice camera has a decent resolution of 13 megapixels. This component works very well. Some experts have questions about contrast and overall speed, but there are no complaints about the picture quality. The camera's capabilities are perfectly combined with the amazing quality of the screen: having taken magnificent shots, the owner of the device can immediately admire them to his heart's content.

Of course, on a computer, tablet and other devices with a larger screen, the pictures look no worse (as well as when printed on a color printer). It is possible to record videos in FullHD format and 30-frame bit rate. The quality of this type of multimedia, as in the case of photos, is very high. The videos look great both on the standard smartphone screen and on larger displays of external devices.

Also quite good - 3 megapixels. There is a powerful LED-based flash (and again we remember that a very similar one is installed on the iPhone 5). The main camera of the smartphone is equipped with an autofocus function. The camera program has a very comfortable interface: all the necessary elements are visible, there is nothing superfluous. The flash, by the way, can also work in fairly bright flashlight mode.

Software

The smartphone runs Android OS version 4.2.1. Unlike many competing solutions, there is no branded shell installed here (however, the standard interface is very easy to personalize, so experts attribute this aspect to the positive aspects of the software inside the Highscreen Alpha Ice phone). The firmware of the device is factory. If you look for popular solutions in software, you can note the shell, which contains a number of technical indicators that clearly demonstrate to the user the degree of processor and memory load, battery charge level and the quality of the operator signal. As a rule, only the last two components are displayed in the interfaces of most other smartphones - and this is where some of the originality of the Vobis shell lies.

Among the most useful pre-installed applications are an office program, a video player, and a phone book. There is a browser. If something is missing, everything can be found and downloaded on Google Play. Thanks to the high performance of the phone, installing applications is very fast. Programs can be launched and used without glitches or freezes. If, of course, the application itself is made with high quality.

Connection

Wireless interfaces supported by the smartphone include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Yes Two SIM cards are supported (although one of them is micro and the other is standard format). The experts who decided to make a review based on the Highscreen Alpha Ice study did not express any significant complaints about the quality of the communication modules.

Experts' summary

Among the clear advantages of the device, which are noted by users and experts, are excellent design, high quality case materials, solid assembly, a magnificent HD display, and the presence of a spare panel. Experts point out that the disadvantages of the device are not the most modern OS and a not very convenient latch for the spare panel. Some people complain about the sound quality from the main speaker, but the overall impression of the device is very positive.

Experts speak particularly positively about the phone's performance. In their opinion, the hardware installed in the device is comparable in its level to the hardware of top models of the world's leading telephone brands. At the same time, the Russian smartphone seriously outperforms foreign competitors in price.

Good day, dear guests and regulars of the “Club of Experts”! This time I was able to test a smartphone from the Russian company Highscreen, namely Highsreen Alpha Ice. This smartphone has a very funny slogan; the manufacturer tells us: “Take your iPhone and circle it.” Agree, it’s quite strange to hear this from a seemingly large company that openly exists in our market. But if you look at the photo of the smartphone, then indeed, the designers clearly started by outlining the iPhone, but it only resembles the product of the Cupertino company in general terms. In fact, this is a typical Android smartphone, based on the already familiar MTK6589. But I won’t go deep into the characteristics; more on that later. Let's start in order.

Packaging and equipment.

The smartphone comes in a non-standard box for a high-screen; I think this is how the manufacturer wanted to emphasize the “premium” quality and uniqueness of the device. The box is made of thick, matte cardboard, decorated in blue and black colors (I apologize in advance, I’m a little colorblind and therefore I always speak very carefully about colors so as not to make a mistake). The box is quite thin and looks very nice.

The front side shows a smartphone in two projections; unlike the entire package, the image of the smartphone is glossy. Also on the front side the main characteristics of the device are briefly listed.

There is no important information on the back side, only the brand logo and barcodes.

There is also no information on the side faces, only a logo with the name of the device.

Opening the box, we will see the smartphone lying in a “bath” made of black matte cardboard. Below it is the delivery kit.

The Highsreen Alpha Ice package includes the following: charger, USB cable, audio headset, replaceable back panel and documentation. As we see here, everything is standard, with the exception of the white back panel, such little things in the kit are always pleasing, and girls will simply be delighted with the white replaceable panel. What was disappointing about the set was the headset; to be honest, in a phone costing 11 thousand I would like to see something of better quality. Personally, this headset reminds me of those that come with cheap dialers; the headphones are too toy-like, with thin wires and dangling speakers. I would immediately throw them away, maybe you can still use them as a headset, but under no circumstances should you listen to music. Oh, I almost forgot, in contrast to the headset there is a rather nice-looking charger, it resembles chargers from Samsung or HTC, the only pity is that it is still 1 ampere. Otherwise, as I already said, everything is standard.

Design

In design, this device really resembles a “Yafon”, but the similarity is only in general terms, and anyone who has ever held the original in their hands or at least seen it up close will not confuse a highscreen device with a smartphone from a Californian company. If you look at the design, breaking away from associations with the iPhone, then the appearance is very attractive; straight lines, chopped edges, flat surfaces and rounded corners look simply wonderful. Alpha Ice comes in a single version from the factory, but it comes with a replaceable white back cover. It seemed to me that with a black, matte cover, the smartphone looks much more organic and has a finished look; in this design, men will like it more. But the replacement cover is already glossy, white with a metallic finish, much brighter and most girls already like it. By the way, both covers collect fingerprints very easily, but getting rid of them is just as easy. Alpha Ice feels very lightweight, its thin body (only 7.5mm thick) and the low weight of the smartphone (although far from record-breaking) do their job, but it doesn’t look like a toy, high-quality materials and assembly inspire confidence. Due to the combination of all these factors, the device looks more expensive and more solid.
The front panel is made very laconically, without any elaborate details, and this only suits the device. With the display turned off, in fact, we see only solid, black protective glass. This is not some kind of Gorilla Glass, but during use, no scratches were noticed on the display, which means it performs its function perfectly. The display gets dirty easily, and apparently does not have an oleophobic coating, but again it feels very smooth and fingers glide over it very easily, and fingerprints are just as easy to remove.

If you look closely, on top we will see the speaker grille, the front camera peephole, as well as a light and proximity sensor.

At the bottom of the front panel there are only Android control buttons, but they are visible only when the display is on.

On the back panel, on top there is a peephole for the main camera and two flash LEDs, as well as a noise-canceling microphone hole. At the bottom there is only the main speaker grille.

There is nothing on the left side edge.

On the right are all the mechanical buttons, the power/lock button and the volume rocker.

On the top edge there is only a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

On the bottom edge there is a micro-USB connector and the main microphone.

Having removed the back cover, on top we will see a slot for a microSD card, as well as two slots for a full-size SIM card and a micro SIM card. Below is a 2000 mAh battery, it is important to note that it is not removable and you should not try to remove it, much less pick it with a screwdriver.

I also couldn’t help but provide a few photos of the device in comparison with the iPhone. (I honestly admit photo of styrnechina)

Display

Highscreen Alpha Ice uses an IPS matrix with a diagonal of 4.7 inches and a resolution of 1280x720, with OGS technology. This is the so-called display without an air gap, this technology allows you to make the display thinner, it increases the viewing angle and improves readability in bright sunlight. Since the screen, as I already said, is made using IPS technology, its viewing angles are actually the maximum possible. The colors are bright and rich, and the display remains readable in sunlight. The density is 320 dpi, which is essentially more than the notorious retina, so only the most advanced geeks will be able to see the pixels here. In general, the display is excellent, at the level of modern flagships, and there are absolutely no complaints about it. It evokes only pleasant impressions.

I almost forgot to mention, the multi-touch display supports up to 10 touches.

Camera

The device uses two cameras, the main one is 13 MP and the front one is 3 MP.
The main camera boasts good quality, especially if you take into account its classmates; of course, it is far from flagships, but still, in comparison with the same Highscreen Alpha R, the camera is much better. In the settings, it is possible to set the resolution up to 18 megapixels, but as I understand it, this is just interpolation (also by the way with the front camera, in the settings of which you can set it to 5 megapixels). The list of modes is standard: panorama, HDR, burst shooting, “beautiful face”, mode of shooting an object from different angles, automatic shooting mode when a smile is detected. There is also autofocus, with the ability to manually select the focus area. In good lighting, the pictures come out quite good, but in artificial lighting the photographs begin to make noise. Below are some examples of images taken with Highscreen Alpha Ice.

Video recording is carried out with a resolution of 1920x1080 at 30 fps. Also below is an example of shooting.

Sound

The main speaker is loud enough to be used for its intended purpose without any problems. The conversational speaker does not cause any complaints, the interlocutor can be heard clearly, there is no crackling or noise, the same applies to the conversational microphone, so the interlocutor can also hear you perfectly. The included headset, as I said above, frankly disappointed me; when you buy a smartphone for 13 thousand, you want to see at least a half-decent headset included. But the complete set is simply terrible, no sound quality, no convenience, no appearance, it looks more like a headset from a phone for 2 thousand rubles. At the same time, the device has no problems with listening to music itself; using good headphones and a third-party player, you can achieve very good sound quality, although I was a little lacking in the output signal power. At volumes above 80% the volume is a donkey, but the quality drops sharply, although up to 80% the sound is very clear and pleasant.

Interface

Alpha Ice uses stock Android 4.2 without any add-ons or skins. Additionally, only Explorer, the 4sync application (this is a cloud service for storing information and synchronizing) and a few other trinkets are installed. There are no special features here, so I’ll just give a few screenshots.

Performance

This device uses the already slightly tired MTK6589 processor. We must, of course, give it its due; it is a very good stone and is sufficient for all everyday tasks. This processor has four cores with a frequency of 1.2 GHz and single-core PowerVR SGX544MP graphics. There is gigabyte of RAM, 4 GB of permanent memory, expandable using microSD cards. But it seems to me that 4 GB is no longer an option now, especially since only about 1.8 GB is available to the user, at current memory prices, one could fork out for 8 GB, I think 3-4 dollars would not have much impact on the final result price.
But let's get back to the processor, as I said above, it is more than enough for everyday tasks, there are no interface slowdowns. In games, everything is also good, most modern games run without problems, games like DeadTrigger 2, Asphalt 8, ModernCombat 4, etc. They run without problems, slightly heavier games run either with lower settings or noticeably slow down. But, in general, you can play.

Net

The dual-SIM layout that is already familiar to everyone is used here; SIM cards work alternately. One of the SIM cards can operate in both 2G and 3G modes, while the second is only 2G. The only caveat is that the first tray is for a full-size SIM card, while the second is only for a micro SIM card. There were no problems with the network itself; reception was always reliable and problem-free.
The Wi-Fi signal is also received well, there were no breaks or drops in speed. Basically, nothing outstanding, just normal work. As for GPS, once again I didn’t have the opportunity to use it, but after looking through the forums, I didn’t find any special problems with it, although very often on devices with MTK the GPS is the sore spot, but in this device everything is fine with it .

Autonomous operation

The Highscreen Alpha Ice has a Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 2000 mAh. The situation with autonomy in this device is again typical for smart phones on MTK6589, about one and a half to two days of battery life. With active use, the battery lasts until the evening. For me, such indicators are more than enough, and in general for such a thin device, I think this is very good. So in this regard, the smart is a strong average. In the Antutu Tester benchmark, in the Battery testing mode, he scored 585 parrots, which is an average result.

conclusions

In conclusion, I can say that the smartphone turned out to be interesting. Attractive appearance, excellent display, good camera and sufficient performance definitely make it a worthy representative of the middle class of Android smartphones. It is suitable for a wide range of tasks; the large, high-quality display allows you to surf the Internet with pleasure. You can play with most modern toys. The camera takes good pictures. And the design will definitely not leave anyone indifferent and will suit both men and girls. Personally, I liked the smart in all respects, and all my needs were more than covered. It has many competitors, these are either representatives of famous brands, which are many times inferior in terms of characteristics, or the same representatives of the second echelon, but all other things being equal, they cannot boast of such a display. Therefore, the hero of today's testing stands apart. The main and only negative, in my opinion, is a slight lack of processor power, which is slowly becoming outdated and cannot handle top games. But with everything else, this is an excellent smart. My rating for this device is 8.5 out of 10, and I think it more than deserves it.

Sensors

Different sensors perform different quantitative measurements and convert physical indicators into signals that a mobile device can recognize.

Main camera

The main camera of a mobile device is usually located on the back of the body and is used for taking photos and videos.

Flash type

The most common types of flashes in mobile device cameras are LED and xenon flashes. LED flashes produce softer light and, unlike brighter xenon flashes, are also used for video shooting.

WiFi

Wi-Fi is a technology that provides wireless communication for transmitting data over close distances between various devices.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is a standard for secure wireless data transfer between various devices of different types over short distances.

USB

USB (Universal Serial Bus) is an industry standard that allows different electronic devices to exchange data.

Headphone jack

This is an audio connector, also called an audio jack. The most widely used standard in mobile devices is the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Connecting devices

Information about other important connection technologies supported by your device.

Browser

A web browser is a software application for accessing and viewing information on the Internet.

Video file formats/codecs

Mobile devices support different video file formats and codecs, which respectively store and encode/decode digital video data.

If we had no complaints about data transmission in the mobile network of MTS and BeeLine, with which we tested the device, everything was within the “reference” values for a modern device, then the search for GPS satellites when the mobile network was turned off caused a little bewilderment: cold start at moderate cloud cover was almost a minute and a half.

Battery

Let us remind you that the device has a non-removable battery, which, with an average user load, including 30–40 minutes of calls, 20–25 messages, periodic checking of mail and social networks, as well as shooting with the camera, will last about a day. Reducing the use of the mobile network and Wi-Fi will slightly increase the indicator, but disabling the second SIM will not, but this is not surprising, since there is only one radio module in the device.

Competitors

Oppo Mirror R819

The first competitor can be called Oppo Mirror R819. With a similar processor and a slightly higher price, the device from the Chinese manufacturer is non-separable and does not support memory cards. A camera with a more modest performance characteristics still produces more interesting images. In terms of battery - parity, but OPPO cares much more about the shell.
