Fixes issues with GTA Online when using a "strict" NAT type. Strict NAT preventing your Switch from connecting? What to do if the nat type is strict

FRAGE:

Mein Spiel zeigt mir an, mein NAT sei Strict oder Moderate. Wie bekomme ich Open NAT?

ANTWORTH:

Many players who bought the medieval action game For Honor encountered such a problem as strict NAT, which did not allow them to participate in online battles with other players. The fact is that it blocks ports, which is why users simply cannot connect to the server. In this guide, we will tell you how to get rid of strict NAT in For Honor.

Types of NAT and antivirus (firewall) updates

First of all, we note that there are several types of NAT, namely:

  • Strict - it can only be played with those users who have an open NAT.
  • Moderate - you can easily play with it with players who have open NAT, but problems may arise with gamers who use strict.
  • Open - any multiplayer mode will run without any problems.

So, if your system has a strict NAT, then you should start solving this problem by downloading the latest versions of your antivirus or firewall, probably installed on your PC.

To identify and update security programs such as Avast, Kaspersky, ESET NOD32, and so on, you should contact their creators, that is, look at the official websites or view the corresponding options in the programs themselves.

Have you updated the above programs, but the problem remains? In this case, you should try to adjust this software in such a way as to open access to the desired game. This can be done using the exception list (this section is called differently in different programs). When adding a toy as an exception, do not forget about Uplay, because it is through it that this action is launched.

How to redirect network ports

Is it impossible to disable the firewall? Then it's worth trying a method like redirecting network ports to your console's IP address to maximize your existing connection.

  • TCP: 80, 443
  • UDP: 3658, 3074
  • TCP: 13000, 13005, 13200

Depending on the programs used, instructions for adjusting ports may differ significantly. They can be found on the manufacturers’ Internet resources. Helpful tips are often posted on free web portals, such as Port Forward (no relation to Ubisoft).

Ports blocked by ISP

Often, restrictions arise due to the policies of your Internet provider. If you are having trouble connecting to For Honor's multiplayer modes, we advise you to contact your Internet provider to see if they have blocked any network ports.

If they were nevertheless blocked, then you should consult with the Internet provider specialists to find out from them how you can bypass this restriction.

Background processes

Problems with strict NAT and inability to connect to network mode can occur due to programs running in the background. For this reason, we advise you to be sure to close all programs before playing games published by Ubisoft. To do this, please read the following instructions:

  1. Open “Start” and activate “search for files and programs.”
  2. Then we delete all the letters in the running line and enter MSCONFIG there. Press Enter and thereby open the OS configuration menu.
  3. We look at the list of startup programs (not the startup section) and select the “Selective startup” option.
  4. Next, remove the flag from the “Load startup items” menu.
  5. At the end, click on the “Apply” button and reboot the system.

How to disable startup items using MSCONFIG? It’s very simple – check the box next to “Normal startup”.

HOST files

The HOST file is a small text file that represents one of the Windows particles. It can be used to route traffic or block web portals. However, in some cases it leads to blocking access to games.

All this information should have helped you deal with strict NAT in the Ubisoft game. If you were unable to cope with this problem, then we advise you to write to the support service, describing in detail the essence of the issue.

If you are unable to connect to other players online on your Nintendo Switch, the problem may be due to a strict NAT type.

Moreover, this very reason could be the strict NAT type in your Switch, or the same NAT type in the Switch of the player you are connecting to.

This problem is quite common and, with the proper skill, can be eliminated quite simply, as a rule. Although not always quickly.

So let's start from afar. NAT is a common abbreviation for Network Address Translation, which, in turn, is translated as “ network address translation ". Simply put, NAT is a mechanism by which your router or Internet gateway can translate your computer's private IP address and port into a public IP address and port. And the NAT type indicates the method that your Switch uses in this case to carry out this transformation and filter incoming packets.

In fact, it is the type of NAT (and there are only three of them: open, moderate and strict) that determines how easy it will be for you to connect to other players online in the game. Respectively, STRICT NAT type means that can only connect to a Switch with an open NAT type.

In general, if the Switch cannot be connected due to the NAT type, then in this post we have collected several of the best options that will help deal with this situation.

First of all, you should look into your home network settings to find out which device is being used - a modem and a router, or a network gateway (which is most likely what it will be). Next in order:

if you are using a router and modem:
  • Make sure your devices have the latest firmware versions installed.
  • if there are any, then simply reboot the devices (turn off the power for a few minutes, preferably several times in a row).
  • try going into the router settings, find the DMZ tab in the admin panel and enter the permission for your Switch in it. If it works out, then after this the console will be able to directly exchange data without a large Internet connection.
  • configure port forwarding on the router - this is the most difficult stage of the event, but almost always effective. You can look for a detailed description of the procedure for reconfiguring ports for your router on that website(by brand name and model).
if you are using a network gateway:
  • We apply all of the above measures;
  • Plus, you can also try switching the gateway to bridge mode, after which only the built-in router will use NAT. You can find out about the “bridge mode” for your Internet gateway from its manual, or by consulting with the technical support of your provider.

If your NAT type is "strict", it may block ports used by the game. As a result, you cannot connect to the server. Although this error is not common in online games, many still encountered it while playing For Honor. In this article I will tell you how to remove strict NAT in For Honor.

Your NAT Types

There are several types of NAT:

Open— there should be no problems with the online mode.
Moderate— problems may arise with other players who have Strict NAT
Strict— you can only play with players who have an open NAT type.

Updating your firewall and antivirus

Start by updating your antivirus or personal firewall that may be installed on your computer.
To update and identify software such as ZoneAlarm, Norton AntiVirus / Internet Security, McAfee, Avast, etc., contact the software manufacturer.

Also, be aware that Windows Firewall (which can be accessed through the Control Panel, as shown below) may block the game's connection to the Internet. For recommendations on how to update Windows (highly recommended), please see

Opening Windows Firewall from Control Panel

If updating these programs does not solve the problem, you may need to configure the software to allow access to a specific application. This action is performed through an exception list (may be called differently, depending on your software). When adding a game as an exception, do not forget to add an executable file (EXE), both for the game and And for Uplay.

Network Port Forwarding

If it is not possible to disable the firewall, you will need to forward the following network ports to your console's IP address for the best possible connection:

Game Ports:
TCP: 80, 443
UDP: 3658, 3074

Uplay PC:
TCP: 13000, 13005, 13200

Example of network port forwarding:
Instructions for setting up network ports are specific to the software used and can be found on the manufacturer's web page. Also, for help, you can check free resources such as Port Forward. Please note that this site is not affiliated with Ubisoft.

Traffic throttling/Blocked ports

You may encounter restrictions from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). If the multiplayer connection problem is not resolved, contact your Internet service provider for more information about any specific restrictions placed on the previously mentioned network ports.

Background applications

You may also encounter problems caused by applications running in the background on your computer. When playing Ubisoft games, please be sure to close all running background applications before playing.

Read and follow the steps listed in the instructions:

  1. Open the Start menu, search for Run (Win XP), Start Search (Win Vista), or Search for Programs and Files (Win 7).
  2. Remove all information from the ticker and enter the word MSCONFIG. Press ENTER to open the System Configuration Utility.
  3. Look through the list of startup items (not the Startup tab) and select the Selective startup option (if it's not already selected) (If you don't see this option, make sure you click on the 'General' option at the top of the window).
  4. Once you have clicked on ‘Selective startup’, uncheck the ‘Load startup items’ checkbox.
  5. After completing this step, click ‘Apply’ and ‘OK’, then restart your computer.

Disabling startup items using Msconfig

It is worth noting that this is only a temporary solution, and any changes can be undone by returning to the MSCONFIG utility, selecting the "Normal Startup" option again
HOSTS files.

The host file is a small text file that is part of the Windows operating system. The host file can be used to route traffic, and sometimes block a website.
Clear your HOSTS file to prevent access to multiplayer games being blocked. The easiest way to clear your HOSTS file is to click on the Fix it button in the Microsoft article, which can be found

The problem is not solved?

Now you know how to remove strict NAT in For Honor. If, after following these steps, the problem is not resolved, please contact support with a full description of your problem, including any error messages you received. Also watch this video, it explains in detail how you can fix strict nat.

You may need to assign a permanent, static IP address to your PlayStation 4 in order to establish a NAT Type 2 connection. Setting a permanent IP address will ensure that your console will always have the same internal IP, even after rebooting the console. Some routers give you the option to manually assign an IP address, so you'll first need to check if this option is available on your router. If not, then you can configure a static IP through the PS4 console menu.

This guide is divided into two parts. Read everything from start to finish.

How to manually set up a static IP address on PlayStation 4 via a router

Find a way in your router to manually configure the IP address. Not all routers support this feature. The setup process will vary depending on the router model you are using. If your modem allows you to manually configure the IP address, then simply assign a permanent IP to the PlayStation 4. In this case, you will not have to make any changes to the settings of the console itself. The router will independently assign an internal IP for the PS4, the functions of which are identical to the static one.

If your router does not support manual IP settings, you will have to make the settings through the PS4 console. To do this, follow the instructions below:

  1. You can try to permanently bind your PS4 to the IP address you are currently using. To find this IP, turn on your PS4 and do the following:

Write down this PS4 IP and MAC address on a piece of paper. In addition, you will need to remember the IP address of your router, which is listed as the Default Gateway. How to do this is described in the next paragraph of our guide.

  1. Through your computer, go to the router settings (this is done through a browser by entering the router’s IP, for example, 192.168.1.1. or 192.168.1.0. / 192.168.0.1). You will need to permanently assign the PS4 the IP address that you wrote down earlier when completing the first step.

Below is a screenshot with an example of a modem that allows you to manually assign an IP.

This router from Asus has lines for entering the IP address, after which the MAC address is selected from the drop-down menu. Use the address numbers you wrote down in step one of this guide. In our example, after recording the numbers, you need to click the “Add” button.

Some routers cannot assign IP addresses that are within the router's DHCP range (the range of addresses that the router automatically assigns to various devices on your network). If this is your case, you will need to choose an IP address outside the router's DHCP range. How to do this, see points 2-4 of the next section of this manual (“ How to set up staticIP-address inPS4 »).

  1. Once you've bound your PS4 to a specific IP address, test your console's connection to make sure it's working properly. To perform a connection test, do the following:

If the connection test is successful, you will see the message “Internet Connection Successful”.

  • UDP: 3478-3479

There is more information on how to do this

  1. Once you have assigned a permanent IP address to your PS4 and forwarded the ports on your router, check your Internet connection. How to do this, see paragraph 3 of this manual.

Congratulations, your connection should be set to NAT Type 2.

If you are unable to establish a NAT Type 2 connection, check whether you did everything correctly. Review the information you entered in the IP Address and MAC Address line.

If you still have difficulties setting up a NAT Type 2 connection, check whether the connection is established correctly. You may have more than one router on your local network. To determine the number of routers on your network, you can use the free Router Detector program. It is very important that there was only one modem on the network, otherwise setting up the network without unnecessary headaches is quite difficult.

How to set up a static IP address on PS4

If you have a router where you cannot manually assign internal IP addresses, follow these steps to set up a permanent IP on your PS4:

  1. Find out what IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS your PS4 is currently using. To do this, follow the instructions below:

Write down the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, primary DNS and secondary DNS. You will need to enter all these numbers into the console a little later.

  1. Next, enter the router settings via PC.

To enter the router settings, write its IP address in the browser line. You can find the IP in the list of addresses that you wrote down when performing step 1. The router’s IP is the address of the Default Gateway.

If you can’t figure out how to go into the modem settings, visit this page. Select your router model and read how to enter the settings.

You need to look through the settings to see the range of DHCP addresses that the modem uses to automatically assign IP to devices on the network.

Below is a screenshot of what a line with this range should look like. Linksys router menu used. The DHCP range is circled in red.

  1. You will need to select a number between 2 and 254 that is outside the DHCP range to assign an IP to your set-top box.

In the example above, the Linksys router uses the range 100 to 149 to assign IP addresses to devices on the internal network. In this case, you can select, for example, the number 31, then the full IP address for PS4 will look like this: 192.168.0.31. Here are some more examples to give you a better understanding:

  • If the DHCP range is 200-254, you can select numbers from 2 to 50
  • If the router uses the range 50-200, then from 2 to 49
  1. To check if the IP you selected can be used, do the following:
  • From the Start menu, open Run
  • Type the command “cmd” without quotes and press Enter
  • After this a black window should appear
  • Next, in the input line, enter: “Ping (space) IP.” For example: Ping 192.168.1.54
  • Press Enter.

If the IP address does not ping, that is, packets go to it, but there is no response, then such an IP is suitable for you, it is free. If response packets arrive, this means that the IP is currently in use, so you need to choose another, free address. Below is an example of an IP address that is already in use.

  1. Next, you'll need your PS4 to set the IP address you've chosen.

Now do the following:

If you have followed all the steps described above exactly, the static IP will be configured correctly. If any problems arise, check that the information you entered is correct, in particular, check the numbers you entered in the IP address, gateway, DNS line. To double-check this, open the PS4 main menu, select Settings => Network => View network status.

  1. Opening ports or Port Forwarding on your router means forwarding all traffic to a specific internal IP address. To get a NAT Type 2 connection, you need to forward the following ports to the PS4 IP address:
  • TCP: 80, 443, 1935, 3478-3480
  • UDP: 3478-3479

There is more information on how to forward ports

  1. Once you have assigned a static IP address to your PlayStation 4 and have correctly forwarded your router's ports, you can test your Internet connection. How to do this, read a little higher.

Congratulations on establishing a NAT Type 2 connection! If any problems arise, first of all we advise you to check the correctness of the numbers entered when specifying the gateway address, IP, DNS and subnet mask.
