Review of PocketBook Cloud - a free cloud service for synchronizing books between readers, smartphones and computers. What will I get from your service?

PocketBook devices not intended for sale in the Russian Federation. "Gray" and "white" devices

“White” devices are devices officially supplied to the Russian Federation. Such readers undergo full customs clearance, they are fully certified for the Russian Federation, are manufactured taking into account all the requirements of the legislation of the Russian Federation, and are equipped with Russified firmware with a full list of applications localized for the Russian Federation. “White” readers are sold with a full manufacturer’s warranty (PocketBook), which from April 2016 is 2 years from the date of sale. If a problem arises with the “white” device, you can contact any PocketBook service center in the Russian Federation and receive qualified support. If the case is found to be covered under warranty, repairs will be carried out free of charge during the entire warranty period.

“Grey” devices are devices imported into the Russian Federation unofficially, and in some cases even illegally. Some companies or even small online stores can import PocketBook devices themselves, bypassing official channels. Such devices are intended for markets of other countries - Poland, Germany, Ukraine, etc. As a result, these readers may not have Russification, pre-installed applications may not work in the Russian Federation, such readers may not have access to PocketBook services intended for Russian markets – for example, PocketBook Cloud.

And most importantly: warranty repair of a “gray” device is possible only from the seller of such a device or in the country in which the reader is intended for sale. As a result, the PocketBook warranty will not be valid in the Russian Federation. Repairing a “gray” device will only be possible for a fee, and in some cases it will not be possible at all. Moreover, it is not always possible to even install firmware from a similar model intended for the Russian market on a “gray” device.

How to distinguish a “gray” PocketBook from a “white” one? To do this, just inspect the retail packaging of the device. On the back of the box or on its end there is a sticker with the serial number, production date of the device and other identification data. In the serial number of the “gray” PocketBook reader the 15th character is the letter W, and in the serial number of the “white” reader the number 2 is in the 15th place. In the “ITEM No./SKU” field at the very end after the model and color identifier in The number of the “gray” PocketBook reader indicates the letter combination WW, and the number of the “white” reader contains RU.

What is the difference between water protection in the PocketBook 641 Aqua 2 and PocketBook 632 Aqua models?

There are two types of water protection in readers - implemented using tuling and implemented using water-repellent gel.

What can be done to make the PocketBook reader last as long as possible?

For simplicity, any electronic device can be compared to an electric light bulb: no one knows exactly when it will burn out, it can happen at absolutely any moment. As a rule, PocketBook readers work for years on end even with not very careful handling - their service life easily reaches five, seven, or even ten years. The PocketBook company is completely confident in the quality of its products and proves this by providing an extended warranty for its devices: 2 years when purchasing in regular stores and 3 years when purchasing readers on the website.

The main advice that can be given to the user of an electronic reader is to be careful with it. Do not carry in bags or backpacks with hard objects. Don't get on the reader. Don't drop it on the floor. These tips are relevant not only for e-readers, but also for any other portable electronics.

Of course, falls and impacts can be completely random. To protect the PocketBook reader from the consequences of shocks and falls, as well as to keep the case and screen of the device in its original form for as long as possible, . All of them are designed in such a way as to reliably protect the screens and cases of readers.

If in the process of reading you come into contact with water and other liquids - for example, you regularly read at a table, in the bathroom, by the pool or on the beach - we recommend our protected models: and.

What should you do if your PocketBook reader gets caught in the rain or falls into water?

Let's start with the fact that in the PocketBook line there are models with protection from water, and they are not afraid of rain. The PocketBook 641 Aqua 2 model is completely sealed and is not afraid of even immersion in water for up to an hour, and the PocketBook 632 Aqua model is not afraid of splashes and short-term immersions.

If you have a reader of a different model (unprotected), and this reader has come into contact with water, then you should turn off the device as quickly as possible and take it to a service center. If we don’t have the opportunity to immediately go to a service center, then we can, for example, put the reader in rice for a day, which is a good absorbent. But you should not place the reader on the battery to speed up the drying process - strong thermal effects can have a very detrimental effect on the electronics.

One way or another, a reader that has been in water should be delivered to a service center at the first opportunity and as quickly as possible. Even after rice.

Please note that problems arising from water ingress are not covered under warranty. So the repairs will be carried out on a paid basis. It is impossible to announce the cost of repairs (even approximate ones) until diagnostics are carried out. Sometimes water damages one specific part, sometimes a completely different one, and sometimes all at once. The cost of repairs depends on this.

If you do not take any action to “rescue” the device after falling into water or rain, then its future fate is difficult to predict. It happens that a small amount of water causes damage to the electronics of the reader, and it will work for many more years. However, most often contact with water leads to corrosion, short circuits and other unpleasant moments. All this, in turn, leads to the fact that the device fails in a matter of hours, days or weeks.

What should I do if I left my device on the beach in the open sun and high temperatures?

Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight is definitely not good for electronic devices. First of all, because due to heating, the battery may partially or completely fail, or even explode. In addition, the sun's rays can, for example, melt the plastic of the device case. This will not lead to harmful consequences, but it will still not bring pleasure.

If your reader was left in the sun for a long time (for example, several hours), you should immediately turn off the device and let it cool down. If you have even the slightest doubt about the serviceability of the reader after turning it on again (for example, it begins to work noticeably slower or heats up during operation), you should turn off the device again and contact the service center. Our specialists will diagnose and, if necessary, carry out repairs.

Please note that problems arising as a result of overheating in the sun are not covered under warranty. So the repairs will be carried out on a paid basis. It is impossible to announce the cost of repairs (even approximate ones) until diagnostics are carried out.

The device will search for available updates on the Internet and, if new firmware is available, download and install it - just like in the case of modern smartphones and tablet computers. Please note that usually the firmware update file is about 100-200 MB in size, so the download process can take quite a long time (depending on the connection speed).

To update the firmware of PocketBook models without Wi-Fi, go to the “Support” section on the official PocketBook website, select your model and download the archive with the firmware to your computer in the corresponding section of the website page. On your computer, you need to extract the firmware file SWUPDATE.BIN from the archive. This file should be written to the root directory of the reader's memory or MicroSD card using a USB cable or card reader. Next, turn off the reader and turn it on while holding down the page turning keys. As a result, the process of installing new firmware will begin.

For PocketBook readers with Wi-Fi, the method of installing updates from MicroSD or built-in memory, described in the previous paragraph, is also available

On average, the process of updating the PocketBook reader firmware takes 10-15 minutes.

What memory cards are supported by PocketBook readers?

PocketBook readers are compatible with MicroSD/MicroSDHC cards with a capacity of up to 32 GB. Cards with speed class from 2 to 10 are supported. The card manufacturer can be any.

The memory card must be inserted into the slot on the PocketBook reader body according to the instructions for the specific model (contacts up or down). To fix the card in the slot, you need to push it into the slot with your fingernail until it clicks so that the card does not stick out of the slot. When installing a memory card, the device must be turned off and disconnected from the computer.

After this, hidden folders will appear in the root of the device’s internal memory, including the system folder.

Can I install additional applications in the PocketBook reader?

PocketBook readers do not support installation of additional applications.

Applications that have undergone special adaptation are already integrated into the firmware of our devices. The list of applications includes games, a gallery, a calendar, a calculator and a number of online services (in the case of models with Wi-Fi). All this in PocketBook readers is located in the “Applications” section.

There are unofficial “folk” methods on the Internet for installing additional applications into PocketBook readers, but PocketBook is not responsible for the results of the installation and operation of these applications. The user may try to install them at his own risk.

The computer does not recognize the device. What to do?

If your computer does not recognize your device, follow the recommendations below.

3) Check if the cable is securely inserted into the USB connector on the computer case. Try connecting the USB cable to a different USB port on your PC. If you are using a desktop computer, try inserting the cable into the USB connector on the rear panel of the system unit.

4) If none of the above methods helped, format the internal memory of the device (“Settings” -> “Maintenance” -> “Formatting internal memory”, or “Settings” -> “Advanced settings” -> “System” -> "Formatting the built-in memory").

Please note that formatting deletes user files (books, photos, settings, accounts) from the device. Therefore, before performing this procedure, it is recommended to back up your data on your computer or external memory card.

    Books

    What are e-books?
    Electronic book (English e-book, e-text) - a version of the book in electronic (digital) form. This term applies both to works presented in digital form and to the devices used to read them.

    In English-speaking countries, the term e-text is also used to refer to digital versions of books that are stored using open formats based on simple text files. Electronic texts are also called educational electronic manuals, which, in addition to text, include raster images, data examples, exercises, specially written comments and answers to possible questions.

    .txt– standard text file. Most of the formatting will be lost, but the book will open in any program.
    .rtf– text with formatting, convenient for reading on a computer and printing.
    .html– hypertext. Can be opened by a web browser, many readers and editors.
    .fb2– an open XML-based format, directly readable by Haali Reader and many others. Readers and editors exist for almost any OS. There is also a converter program FB2Any. Recommended for PocketBook devices.
    .lrf– format used in the Sony Reader family of devices.
    .doc.prc– documents for reading on Palm (Mobi Pocket, etc.).
    .pdf– Adobe Acrobat document. The A4 version is perfect for printing, the A6 version is suitable for reading on many e-ink readers.
    .epub– an HTML-based format actively promoted by Adobe. Supported by many modern programs and most new devices. It is quite convenient to use it on iPhone.
    .isilo3– a specialized format for the advanced iSilo reader program, available for many platforms (Windows mobile, Palm).
    .rb– books for specialized devices Rocket e-book/REB1100.
    .lit– format for the Microsoft Reader program. The program exists for the entire Windows line; among other things, it can “read the text of a book out loud.”

    .acsm– a format used by Adobe Digital Editions to send activation data to a remote server, which uses it to create a secure book in PDF (or epub) format that is downloaded to your computer if activation is successful.

    How to work with Adobe DRM protected formats?

    When downloading a book in PDF DRM format, you save a file on your computer with the extension .acsm. In order to open it and download the book in PDF format, you need the free Adobe Digital Editions program. When you first launch the program, you will be asked to authorize your computer using Adobe ID - this is necessary to authorize mobile devices capable of working with DRM formats on your PC. If you do not want to read the book on other devices, you can not authorize (Don’t authorize this computer) in the Adobe Digital Editions dialog box. If you need to open the book on other devices (for example, on a PocketBook e-book reader), you must register for free on the Adobe website and enter registration data (adobe id and password) in the Digital Editions program. After that, connect your device to your computer, and after Digital Editions detects and authorizes the device, you can copy books to the device. For Pocketbook devices: books are saved in the “Digital Editions” folder.

    How can I buy the required format?

    We have a principle: One purchase – all formats. After purchasing the book, all offered formats become available for downloading.

    What can you do with a purchased book?

    How many times can I download a book I purchased?

    To prevent unauthorized access to books, a security threshold has been set on your account - 7 races of each book per month or 19 races per year. If for some reason this was not enough for you, contact support, we will provide you with additional downloads.

    How can I find out about the release of new books in my favorite genre?

    You can set up a subscription to books of any genre you are interested in, by marking the required genres during registration or in the “My Data” section of the user menu, and receive messages about new releases to your e-mail.

    I have too many purchased books, how can I navigate through them?

    In the "My Books" section you can create bookshelves. Create shelves with “speaking” titles and arrange books on them.

    How to purchase a magazine?

    Just click the Subscribe link... and then check out your cart. After purchasing a subscription, magazines for the paid period will automatically appear on your Periodicals bookshelf at the time of publication on our website, and you will receive a notification to your e-mail. As a rule, a subscription costs less than purchasing each issue separately.

    I made a mistake when sending an SMS message

    Make sure that:
    You have sent a message to one of the numbers from the list provided on the Recharge via SMS page.
    Money has been debited from your mobile account.
    If so, look at the reply SMS message:
    - The response message is not your Login - you made a mistake when specifying your ID (about ID, see the ACCOUNT section). As a result, the money was debited from the phone, but did not end up in your account. The situation is unpleasant, but fixable - you have the mailing address of the user for whom you topped up the account. Write to him and, perhaps, he will not refuse you a return courtesy.
    - In the response message there is an apology and a link to the wap-portal of the mobile operator - You typed “something that does not start with BKL (Latin alphabet)”. Your money has been credited to your mobile operator's account and they will send you a link where you can spend it. We did not receive this payment.
    - In the response message, the text "NNN" is incorrect. Be more careful when typing SMS text - apparently you typed "BKL". Your money went somewhere, but to the wrong address. Write to the support service of the company that provides the SMS replenishment service.

    I paid money using a printed receipt through the bank, but the funds did not arrive in my account?

    Be sure to make sure that when a bank employee makes a payment, your Login is indicated in the payment document, otherwise the money will go to our account as anonymous. Contacting support will help resolve this, but will take time.
    - As a rule, money paid through the bank ends up in your account “today - tomorrow”, but some banks are in no hurry to transfer payments. If the replenishment has not occurred, send a scan of the payment document with the bank’s note about the payment to the support address, and we will carry out the replenishment.

    I can't make a WM money payment.

    Make sure that your browser allows WM payments (WM certificate is accepted, ActiveX is installed).

    I transferred money to your account in the WM system by copying the wallet number. But for some reason they were not credited to my account in the system.

    Our system only processes payments made in the standard way through the “Top up balance” item. There is no need to manually copy the wallet number or perform other complex actions. Make sure the correct amount is specified and click “Next”.
    If you still transferred money to our wallet manually, contact support. Be prepared for the fact that for manual payment processing by our specialist, you will be charged 20% of the amount. Also, manual processing may take several days.

    Payment from my bank card does not go through.

    Contact the bank that services your card for clarification. Your card is probably not activated for online payments.
    You can, by going through the verification procedure when contacting your bank, temporarily remove restrictions on Internet payments from your card, or try a different card.
    Try a different payment method.

    Scratch card replenishment fails?

    Check that the code you entered is correct - you have 3 attempts per day.
    If you think that the code was entered correctly, but the payment did not go through, write a letter to the support service from your login address indicating the card number.

    What devices are best for reading e-books?

    Modern technologies bring us new media and ways of obtaining it. Users of the site have the opportunity to order devices for reading Pocketbook e-books from our website directly from the manufacturer.

    What besides e-books can be purchased on your website?

    • We are glad to offer you wonderful audio books, favorably distinguished by the quality of soundtracks, cast and thoughtful selection of works.
    • We offer you electronic dictionaries for PCs and mobile devices, the ABBYY FineReader recognition system, the ABBYY PDF Transformer program for converting and creating PDF documents, the ABBYY Screenshot Reader utility for creating snapshots of any area of the screen. From our website you can purchase download versions of ABBYY products.

    Currently, electronic books have become a kind of terminals for purchasing digital content in online stores. This is why, by the way, devices for reading e-books are constantly becoming cheaper. The manufacturers' calculation is clear: to attract consumers at the lowest possible price, selling them an e-reader almost at cost, in order to then make money by selling books and paid subscriptions to newspapers and magazines. It is for this reason that after purchase the device must be registered on the manufacturer’s website. Having created an account there, you can attach a plastic card to it to pay for purchases. After registering and entering plastic card data on the reader, the ability to purchase books directly from the device is activated.

    In Amazon and Barnes & Noble models, you can connect the ereader to Wi-Fi, and then access the company website through the Store application. There is a search function in the "Store". Find the book you need and click “Buy” - money is automatically debited from the card, and the book is loaded into the reader literally within a few seconds via Wi-Fi. Thus, at any time of the day, wherever you are, you have the opportunity to purchase the necessary book. All you need is an e-reader and access to Wi-Fi.

    Of course, so far this marketing scheme is paying off in America and Europe. Russians are not accustomed to such services, and Russian paid online libraries still leave much to be desired. Western online platforms, such as Amazon, do not offer Russian-language literature, and in general they prefer to ignore the Russian market. Therefore, the question of why register a device on Amazon if you do not plan to use it is logical. But the answer is that the Kindle is not a gadget, but a service.

    In addition to the ability to purchase books on the company website, registration provides the user with two advantages: activation of additional functions and access to Amazon online services. Our article is devoted to describing the advantages that registration and Barnes & Noble provide on branded library sites.

    Amazon Kindle Registration

    In the case of Kindle readers, registering these devices with Amazon allows you to activate a number of functions that are not available without registration:

    In addition to the functions activated directly on the device, after registration you will also receive the features provided by the Amazon website:

    • downloading books without connecting to a computer (details in our);
    • wireless downloading of books through the personal e-mail assigned to your Kindle (using it, you can send books and documents to your Kindle via regular e-mail);
    • Amazon online converter (when downloading wirelessly to the reader, you can send books in DOC, DOCX and RTF - they are converted on the website and loaded into the reader in MOBI format);
    • access to the Amazon “cloud” - a 5-gigabyte storage of personal files (books and documents can be stored there and uploaded to the reader as needed via Wi-Fi through the “View Archived Items” menu function).

    In addition, by creating an account, you can link not only your Kindle to it, but also any device on Android, iOS or Windows by installing the Kindle mobile application there. Now you can start reading on a Kindle reader, and continue, for example, on an iPad or using a mobile application. It can be downloaded from Google Play (for Android) or AppleStore (for iOS). Through a single account, information about the page on which you finished reading, as well as your notes and bookmarks, will be automatically synchronized. This way, you can start reading a book on one device and continue on another. Agree, this is very convenient.

    So, if we have convinced you of the need to register your e-reader or tablet on Amazon, follow a simple algorithm. This process will not take much time, but it will add functionality to your Kindle:

    1. Turn on Wi-Fi/3G module;
    2. On the first page of the “Settings” section, connect to the Wi-Fi network;
    3. On the same page, select “Registration”;
    4. If you did not have an account on Amazon.com before, then select “Create an account through Kindle”;
    5. You can skip the credit card registration step. Registration is completed. A welcome email will load into the Kindle Main Menu.

    Register Barnes & Noble Nook

    Another popular American reader manufacturer, Amazon's main competitor, Barnes & Noble is well known in Russia for its and . Unlike Amazon, these readers cannot be used without registration in principle. When you turn it on for the first time, they ask you to create an account on the company website - without this step it is simply impossible to start using the reader. There is an option to postpone registration (here is a description of how to bypass registration on the Nook Simple Touch), but then you will still have to register, since the battery runs out very quickly on an unregistered Barnes & Noble reader.

    Barnes & Noble's book and periodical store is poorer than Amazon's. And although books in Russian have recently appeared there, and a pretty good free set of classics in English is also available, you will not get any other advantages from registering your Nook on the bn.com company website. So, registration of readers from this manufacturer can be called a forced necessity. To register or tablet from Barnes & Noble, you will definitely need access to Wi-Fi.

    We will describe the registration process step by step so that you do not have any problems with how to register your Nook Simple Touch (with GlowLight) on the company website:

    1. Charge the device from a computer, or using a power adapter;
    2. After the reader is charged, a welcome splash screen will appear on the screen. Click "Next" in the lower right corner of the screen;
    3. On the next screen, you need to accept (and be sure to read) the terms of the license agreement by clicking "Next";
    4. You need to select a time zone. Russians can choose any one - after registration it can be changed to one of the Russian ones in the settings.
    5. The next step is to connect to Wi-Fi.
    6. Enter your data: last name, first name and e-mail. Create a password.
    7. You can skip the credit card registration step by clicking "Skip". Registration is completed.

    E-readers from other manufacturers usually do not require registration. In any case, it does not provide any benefits from using the e-reader in conjunction with the website and does not enable additional functions. Some Pocketbook models require registration to gain access to the ObreeyStore content library. However, so far they cannot be said to be closely integrated with this service (it is impossible to buy books from ObreeyStore directly from the Pocketbook device), and therefore most users prefer to ignore this opportunity.

    In general, in the case of e-readers and Amazon Kindle tablets, registration on the company’s website not only makes it possible to purchase books and subscriptions to periodicals, but also provides access to online services useful to the user, and also activates additional functions. At Barnes & Noble, registration essentially activates the devices themselves, so it's unavoidable. The registration process is not complicated, so we recommend that everyone be sure to register their devices in order to enjoy their functionality to the maximum!
