In fact, in my daily trips I mostly use a navigation program City Guide, the installation of which on the Explay PN-990 GPRS car navigator was described in the post "Installing City Guide on Explay PN-990 GPRS". That is, I almost never used navigation from Navitel (except when traveling around the region). But firstly, Navitel Navigator was already pre-installed on the Explay PN-990, and I don’t like it when something doesn’t work the way it should, and secondly, if I don’t install iGO, then in my next on a trip to our northern neighbor, I plan to use the navigation map of Finland from Navitel, since the map of Finland from CityGuide is somehow cut down. Although it is necessary to clarify, of course, whether there is a corresponding release of the map of Finland for Navitel Navigator version 5.

Preparing to reinstall the Navitel Navigator program

First, a little preparatory steps. We go to the website of the company ZAO "CNT", enter your username and password. If you don’t yet have a login and password, register, because you can download updates for programs and maps only after registration.

In the “Personal Account” section, select “My devices (update)” and go to the corresponding tab, which will indicate the device (or series of devices) you registered. If you have not yet registered your car navigator, you will be prompted to do so. To do this you will need a license key. In my case, the Navitel Navigator program was preinstalled on the Explay PN-990 and to find out the license key number for your program, you need to go to: “Main menu - Information - About the program.”

Click “Available updates” and you will be taken to a page where sections will be presented:

In my case, the following were available for free update: the Navitel Navigator navigation program itself version 5.0.0.693, new releases of maps (Q4) for the basic configuration, which was installed by default in the navigator (i.e. maps of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and a base map of the world) and user manuals for the auto version (user manuals for versions of the Navitel Navigator program 3.5 are presented and 5.0 in Russian and English).

Considering that the instructions for installing the Navitel Navigator program version 5 strictly do not recommend using Q2 release cards (*.nm2 format), then, of course, download release Q4-2010(*.nm3 format).

Connecting Explay PN-990 to the computer

To connect the Explay PN-990 car navigator to a computer, you will need a USB cable (included with the navigator) and:

Everything is quite simple here. We unpack on our computer the pre-downloaded archive of the Navitel Navigator navigation program (the current version for the car navigator discussed here is 5.0.0.693 ) and transfer the contents of the folder to a similar folder ("Navitel") in the system memory of the device.

Don't forget to transfer the activation key file to the program folder. If suddenly you forgot to save it, then go to your “Personal Account” and download this file (see the first screenshot).

We delete all maps from the \NandFLASH\NavitelContent\Maps folder, because these are all Q2 releases. We have already downloaded the necessary maps, release Q4))) Regarding navigation maps. In my opinion, in this regard, CityGuide is still much more convenient. You can download exactly what you need, rather than downloading 1.5GB of Russian maps in one file, which, moreover, categorically refused to fit in the navigator’s system memory. I had to record it on an external memory card (“Mobile device” - StorageCard).

So... what else are they telling us about the innovations (hereinafter - a quote from the developer’s website): "With the release of the Navitel 5 update, forget about the need for indexing maps and lengthy routing! With the introduction of the new nm3 map format for Navitel Navigator 5, maps of the country are presented in a single file, which no longer requires separate indexing. And the atlas, consisting of maps of several countries (for example, Russia + Ukraine + Belarus + Kazakhstan - Navitel Commonwealth kit) is indexed even on a device with “weak” technical characteristics in just a couple of minutes! Preparing the memory card for use

I recommend formatting the memory card before use. The need for formatting has been confirmed by personal experience))) Both maps from Navitel and CityGuide are sensitive to memory card errors and at some point you may simply have problems with the operation of the navigation program.

In addition, use the program SDFormatter for formatting memory cards (instead of the built-in formatting utilities in Windows OS) is highly recommended on the SD Association website. Navitel residents echo them))) The SDFormatter program was created specifically for owners of SD and SDHC memory cards and formats memory cards in accordance with SD/SDHC/SDXC specifications, which reduces the number of errors associated with writing/rewriting data to SD memory cards and SDHC, and also extends the life of this type of card.

Completing the Navitel Navigator reinstallation process

Turn off the Explay PN-990 car navigator and disconnect it from the computer. Then we turn it on. As a rule, most turn either to companies that sell these devices, or to local “craftsmen” with a request to help in this matter. But with the right approach, you can save money, because updating your navigator is not such a difficult matter.
First, let's figure out which maps are most suitable for which navigators.

There are now a lot of manufacturers on the market of navigators and navigation maps who use maps from third-party developers in their devices. If you buy a Prestigio or Prology navigator, then Navitel system maps will be pre-installed on them, but if you buy a Garmin nuvi 1300, you will become the owner of maps developed specifically for this device, which will make it difficult to switch to maps and services from another manufacturer, although today Today, all GPS developers are actively expanding the capabilities of the devices and they are functionally equivalent.

To update the navigator, you will need a computer and a USB cable to connect the navigator to the computer. We download the map for the device to the computer, then connect the navigator and copy your maps to it. Each manufacturer has a slightly different procedure.
Let's start with devices controlled by Navitel software, as the most widespread and popular in the CIS.

The first thing you need to do is download the latest map update from the manufacturer on the website www.navitel.su. To counteract pirates who steal cards, the developers have introduced registration for each device, so you will need to register, and then download the update from the “My Devices” menu from your personal account.

Select the type of map depending on your navigator. Unpack the resulting file. We connect the navigator to the computer, go into its memory, cut out all the old maps onto the computer, and upload new maps instead. Disconnect the device from the computer and launch the Navitel program. If you did everything correctly, the program itself will find the map files and launch them. Sometimes you need to create a map for a specific region, but you will also need the maps installed on your navigator.

In this case, create a folder on the flash drive from your navigator with any name, for example, Home.

We load the maps into this folder, insert the USB flash drive into the navigator, and In the Navitel program settings, manually specify the path to the folder:

Select “Open atlas” and click create atlas at the bottom.

Launch the saved GarminMapsUpdate.

If the update asks for a key, then enter the license number in the add key field.

To find out the license number, on the Garmin website in the Maps Updates section, select your navigator and click “content on device”, copy and paste:

Select the region of the map that we want to install. Don't be alarmed if the update takes a long time, sometimes a couple of hours.

It happens that there is not enough space to add new cards and the system will ask you whether to clean the device. By checking the "Save music and pictures to computer" checkbox, you will save them to your computer.

Your attention may be drawn to the “Installation Options” inscription. In it, you decide which card should be updated or installed, and you can also specify the region that will be displayed on the device.

This method is quite complicated for a beginner, so Garmin has created a simpler and easier method. Using the Garmin Lifetime Updater program, it is now possible to update maps offline.

The program itself constantly searches and updates maps depending on what maps are installed or on your location and updates them:

Double-click on the “Garmin Lifetime Updater” installer launcher file, which has permissions or exe (or dmg, if you are the proud owner of a MacPc), then carefully read and follow the instructions.
Add your device by clicking “add device”, enter the name of the device, creating an alias for it.
Click "Add Device".

If you already have an older version of the file installed, you will need to update the map.
Garmin Lifetime Updater has many settings that will make your life much easier later on.

Let's look at them in more detail:

"Devices". In this section you can add or remove a device.
"Schedule". Here you indicate after what period you need to update the cards.
"Compound". If you have a connection through a proxy server, then specify its settings at this point.
“Installation” is the most interesting section; your device can be updated immediately, or you can have the maps downloaded to your computer themselves and then uploaded to the connected device. Very convenient if you make money from this. A client arrives, and you have his navigator in the settings. You connect, and the update begins immediately, without unnecessary movements.
"About the program". Here, apart from information about the installed version, you will not find anything else.
Sometimes you will need a map that is not included in your package on your navigator. Then you can go two ways. The first is correct, but expensive - using the nuMapsLifetime utility.

Connect the navigator to the computer, go to the Garmin website, then enter the serial number:

The second method is illegal, but free. On the Internet you look for cards, as a rule, along with them comes a keygen, which will help you break the protection against pirates.

Then we connect the navigator to the computer, first installing an SD card in it. Your navigator will now appear in “My Computer” as two new drives.
We go to the flash drive (not to the internal memory of the navigator), there we create the “Garmin” folder, where we write the downloaded files with maps and keys to them. These are two different files, one contains the map, and the second is generated using keygen. You will find how to create it in the archive with maps. The fact is that each keygen has its own instructions, which are usually located in the readme file (opened using notepad). And the ID number will help generate a key file for the card.

Another fairly new map service for navigators is Cityguide. Maps work with both GPS and Glonas. Their peculiarity is that they are released free of charge, but with a trial period. Also, with the help of additional paid content, their capabilities are expanded. The maps are very convenient and accurate; they were developed by the Russian company Mit LLC.

In the free version, your navigator will only work for 15 days. But paid add-ons will turn it into a simply amazing device that will show traffic jams, be able to adjust the map online with changes in traffic flow or new installed signs, indicate where road work is being carried out, and you will not need to update them.

All this is implemented by involving all traffic participants in the service of informing others; you will be able to mark problem areas on the navigator, which will transfer them to the server, where they will be marked and broadcast to other people. The software package provides the ability to communicate with friends through the built-in “walkie-talkie” program, which has a separate channel on the Internet, and you can also see where they are at any time. But this is possible if their navigator has City Guide.

Another advantage of this system is the use of maps from the free OpenStreetMap project, which are adapted for this system. But paid functions do not work on them, except for some maps that can display traffic jams.

Installing the program is very simple: directly from the device, go to the program service (for example, GooglePlay or AppStore) and download it from there. Next, launch it and select the trial or paid option to download the program. If you choose a trial, your cards will only work for 15 days from the moment of downloading and only if there is Internet access.

We install cards using a computer:

We go to the website www.probki.net.
Enter the password and login received during trial activation (you can find them in this path: Menu -> Miscellaneous -> Settings -> City Guide -> Account).
In the “Your licenses” list, select a trial license, the first letters will be TMPA, then the numbers.
We go to the map section and select the map that we need, while hovering the mouse cursor over the word “date”, as a result it will change to the word “download”, and the free time will begin counting from the date.
In the panel that appears after “download”, select the desired service and download it to your computer.
We connect the navigator using the USB cable that comes with the kit. Before this, you will need to change the operating mode of the device; see the instructions for the device.
We select an SD memory card and copy the downloaded maps into it, into a folder on the navigator called CGMaps.

Disconnect the navigator from the computer.
We launch the navigation program in the main menu of the navigator.
You can also install maps online from your device if it has a high-speed connection. For this:
Select the “Download maps” menu along the path: Menu -> Miscellaneous -> Settings -> Maps -> Map Manager.
Select the required cards from the server and check the boxes.

As with other navigation systems, pirates also hacked Cityguide; the most common cure for it is the cure from Freedom-forum. The instructions are very simple:

But this option does not always work, which is why there are already hacked navigation programs. To replace, simply erase the official one and replace it with the one hacked by pirates. Then follow the instructions.

The navigation program from Cityguide will work perfectly on all models of navigators from Explay, Prestigio and Prology. Even if you install them instead of those that were already there.
I would like to note that maps from Navitel have all the capabilities that Cityguide has, but at the same time, some functions are implemented in them much more inconveniently than in navigation maps from Cityguide.

It is also worth considering another navigator and a set of navigation maps. It's called Shturmann. True, its developer closed the project and they are no longer produced. But there were still cards for him, and not bad ones at that. The easiest way to do this is to run the Installer.exe file and all the maps will be installed on the navigator, just don’t forget to connect it to your computer first.
