Word file extensions. Basic document types in Word

Hello! Lately, a lot of people have been contacting me asking for help in opening a file in the form of a Word document, since users have not been able to do this. When I went to their computer, I noticed that most users try to open a document with the extension “ docm" As you know, this document format contains macros and is intended for new versions of Microsoft Word 2007/2010/2013. And since many people have an outdated version of Office, this created certain inconveniences.

When I answered users like this, they immediately asked the question, how can it be opened? Well, of course I started telling you that it only costs change file extension to standard and everything will work. But, before I had time to finish this, the question was asked again about how to change this extension. Of course, I told the user how this is done, without missing even the smallest details, how it is done and why, the file opened and the users were satisfied.

So, after this I decided to tell you, how can you change the file extension of Windows 7, 8, 10, because I'm sure not everyone knew about it.

What you need to change the file type extension

Before you start changing and editing the format of your files, I recommend making a backup copy of them, placing it on drive D, and only after that proceed directly to following my recommendations. Why is this necessary? For example, in order to prevent further damage to documents, since there is a chance that after changing the file extension, it may not open, so the proverb: “Forewarned is forearmed” is suitable here.

So, as you know, by default in operating systems the file format is not displayed, because it is simply hidden from inexperienced users, so that they do not harm themselves. Therefore, I think you have already guessed that we should allow the file type extension to be displayed.

Method number 1:

Method number 2:

I have already written in more detail on this topic in a separate article entitled: “”.

Changing the file extension

There is nothing complicated about changing the file type extension; in principle, by following the steps that I will now show, you will see for yourself.

Having opened access to displaying the file format, click on our file, in my example it will be a Word document " TEST.docm", and call the context menu, where we select " Rename».

Now for example I need to rename from docm V docx, for this I go to the name of the file extension, which is located after the dot and indicate there “ docx" After changing the file extension, the document should open in its normal form.

As I said, everything is so easy that you probably haven’t even had time to strain yourself yet. Also, in a similar way, you can change the extension of files such as: “ 7zip" on " RAR" etc. In general, if you can’t open documents in this way, then just change the file extension and you will be happy.

Changing the file extension using the example document.docm

The DOC file extension is most often associated with documents created in a word processor. Microsoft Word, the famous word creation and processing application that comes with all versions of the Microsoft Office suite. This is the default file format used in Microsoft Word 97-2003, while newer versions of MS Word (2007+) offer users to save documents in DOCX.

What's in DOC files

A DOC file was originally created in WordPerfect, which was widely used in the 1980s. But the DOC extension has been on the lips of almost everyone since the advent of Microsoft Word in the 1990s. Today it is the most common format for text documents.

Previously, DOC files contained only formatted text, but over time it became possible to add a large number of built-in objects - such as any tables and various charts from other applications, as well as sounds, videos and images.

DOC conversion

To convert the DOC format, for example, convert DOC to - you can use any convenient online DOC converter or program, for example, Convertin.io.

How to open a DOC file

DOC files can be opened using the latest version of standard word processing applications such as Microsoft Word and LibreOffice Writer. Wordpad on Windows can also be used to open DOC files, although the formatting is very limited. As of Microsoft Office 2007, the format is the "native" format of that word processor, and it will not open in earlier versions of word processing programs without a compatibility pack.

The main program for opening DOC files is Microsoft Word (version 97 and above), but it is proprietary software (unless you are using the free trial version of MS Office). However, there are several free alternatives to the paid Microsoft Office that have support for DOC files - Kingsoft Writer, LibreOffice Writer and OpenOffice Writer. With their help, you can not only open DOC files, but also edit them, saving them in the same format. And in the first two, DOC files are even successfully saved in the new DOCX format from Microsoft. You can also open a Microsoft Word file online, for example, using the service

If the .WORD file is known to your system, then you can open it by double-clicking the mouse or pressing ENTER. This operation will launch applications associated with the .WORD file installed on the system. If the system encounters a file for the first time and there are no corresponding associations, the action will end with the system prompting you to find the corresponding software on your computer or on the Internet.

Sometimes it happens that the wrong program is assigned to serve the .WORD file type. This happens as a result of the action of hostile programs such as viruses or malware, but most often it is the result of an application being mistakenly combined with the .WORD file extension. If, when servicing a new .WORD file type, we specify the wrong program to the system, the system will mistakenly recommend its use whenever a file of this type is encountered. In this case, you should try to select the appropriate application again. Right-click on the .WORD file, and then select from the menu the option "Open With..." then "Choose default program". Now select one of the installed applications from the above list and try again.

Programs that will open the .WORD file

Manual editing of the Windows Registry

If our system cannot cope with the .WORD extension and all automatic and semi-automatic methods of teaching it this art have failed, we are left with manual editing of the Windows registry. This registry stores all information related to the operation of our operating system, including the connection of file extensions with programs for servicing them. Team REGEDIT inscribed in the window “search for programs and files” or "launch in the case of older versions of the operating system, it gives us access to the registry of our operating system. All operations performed in the registry (even not very complex ones regarding the .WORD file extension) have a significant impact on the operation of our system, so before making any modifications, you should make sure that a copy of the current registry is made. The section we are interested in is the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. The following instructions show, step by step, how to modify the registry, specifically the registry entry containing information about the .WORD file.

Step by step

  • Click “start” button
  • In the “find programs and files” window (in older versions of Windows this is the “Run” window), enter the command “regedit” and then confirm the operation with the “ENTER” key. This operation will launch the system registry editor. This tool will allow you not only to view existing records, but also to modify, add or delete them manually. Due to the fact that the Windows registry is key to its operation, all operations carried out on it should be performed judiciously and consciously. Carelessly removing or modifying an inappropriate key may permanently damage the operating system.
  • Using the ctr+F key combination or the Edit menu and the “Find” option, find the .WORD extension you are interested in by entering it in the search engine window. Confirm by pressing OK or using the ENTER key.
  • Backup copy. It is extremely important to create a backup copy of the registry before making any changes to it. Every change has an impact on the operation of our computer. In extreme cases, erroneous modification of the registry may result in the system being unable to restart.
  • The value you are interested in regarding the extension can be manually edited by changing the keys assigned to the found extension.WORD. In this place, you can also independently create the desired entry with the extension a.WORD if it is not in the registry. All available options are located in the handy menu (right mouse button) or in the "Edit" menu after placing the cursor in the appropriate place on the screen.
  • After you finish editing the entry for the .WORD extension, close the system registry. The introduced changes will take effect after restarting the operating system.

Microsoft Office 2007 introduced a new file format based on the XML language. By default, documents created in Word 2007 are saved with a new filename extension, which is created by adding the suffix " x" or " m" to the usual extension. Suffix " x" indicates that the XML file does not contain macros, but the suffix " m" - that the XML file contains macros. Thus, the names of regular Word 2007 files have the extension docx, but not doc.

XML formats provide a range of benefits - not only for developers and the products they create, but also for individuals and organizations.

Files are automatically compressed, and in some cases can be up to 75 percent smaller in size than in previous versions of Word.

The format provides improved recovery of damaged files. The files are built on a modular principle, in which different data components are stored separately from each other in the file. This allows files to be opened even if some component of the file (such as a chart or table) is destroyed or damaged.

Makes it easier to discover documents containing macros. Files that are saved with the extension docx, cannot contain macros written in VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) or ActiveX controls, and therefore do not contain the security risk associated with this kind of embedded code. Only files with the extension docm may contain VBA macros and ActiveX controls stored in separate parts of the file. Different filename extensions make it easy to distinguish files that contain a macro from files that do not, and make it easier for antivirus programs to detect files containing potentially dangerous code. In addition, system administrators can block documents that contain unwanted macros or controls, increasing the security of opening documents.

It should be noted that the new file formats are not available for use in previous versions of Word. To be able to open and edit Word 2007 files in earlier versions, you must download the necessary file converters.

Opening files of other formats

Word allows you to open files in different formats. Default in window Opening a document(see Figure 1.25) only Word files are displayed. To open a file of a different format, click on the button that indicates the type of files to be opened (Fig. 1.29) and select the required format or mode All files.

Thus, for example, you can open files of the format txt or rtf. When opening text files of the format txt You may be prompted to select an encoding when converting the file.

When you open a document in Word 2007 that was created in Word 2003, Word 2002, or Word 2000, compatibility mode is automatically turned on and the title bar of the document window displays Reduced functionality mode. Enabling Compatibility Mode ensures that your document does not use new and enhanced features in Word 2007 and that users of earlier versions of Microsoft Word can edit any part of the document.

It should be noted that in Compatibility Mode you can open, edit and save Word 97-2003 documents, but you will not be able to use the new features of Word 2007.

Saving files in a different format

By default, all files are saved in the same format in which they were opened. New Word 2007 documents and files are saved in the format Word document, files from previous versions are saved in the format Word 97 2003 document, RTF files are saved as RTF text etc.

When saving, you can change the file format. To do this in the window Saving a document Click on the button indicating the file type and select the required type in the menu that appears (Fig. 1.30).

The selected format may not support some document design elements, and a corresponding warning will appear. When saving a document in the format Plain text You will need to select an encoding to convert the file.

Features of saving files from previous versions of Word in Word 2007 format

When saving Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, Word 2003 files in the format Word 2007 document You can enable compatibility mode with previous versions, i.e. disable new features of Word 2007. This must be done if the file will subsequently be saved for users who do not have Word 2007. To disable new features in the window Saving a document(Fig. 1.31) check the box Maintain compatibility with Word 97-2003.

When saving files from previous versions of Word, in the format Word 2007 document a warning may appear about possible changes in the document layout (Fig. 1.32). Click the button OK. For the convenience of further work, you can check the box Don't ask this question again.

Features of saving Word 2007 documents in the format of previous versions of Word

When you save a document created in Word 2007 in the format Word document 97-2003 some changes will be made automatically.

Some data in standard document blocks and AutoText elements may be lost.
