Nokia N8: testing the best Symbian smartphone. Testing the Nokia N8 smartphone Nokia n8 dimensions

General characteristics

Type

Deciding on the type of device (phone or smartphone?) is quite simple. If you need a simple and inexpensive device for calls and SMS, it is recommended to choose a telephone. A smartphone is more expensive, but it offers a wide variety of options: games, videos, the Internet, thousands of programs for all occasions. However, its battery life is significantly less than that of a regular phone.

Before purchasing, check the specifications and equipment with the seller.

Advantages of the phone:

1) Battery. Holds a charge for a VERY long time. I occasionally make calls, write SMS, listen to music, take photographs (without the Internet) - it may not be charged for a week! And if you turn on the energy saving mode - that’s it! When the charge level drops to a critical level, it lives for quite a long time, then it beeps for another 4 hours and only then turns off.
2) Housing. Very durable - I have fallen more than once (on parquet, on concrete, and on corners) - does not turn off when dropped, continues to work as usual. From the hardest landings there were small dents on the corners (maximum 1mm), but the paint did not come off.
2) Case included. The good news is not its presence itself, but its quality - it looks like rubber (not plastic), bends easily, puts on, but most importantly, it does not slip at all! That is, you can put your phone on the dashboard of a car without fear, for example. However, in such clothes it is very difficult to squeeze it into your pocket.
3) Sound + speakers. When using the most common in-ear headphones, bass is heard. I am not a musician, and I am satisfied with the quality.
4) Alarm clock + call. At maximum volume you can go deaf. There is an option to gradually increase the volume. The alarm can be set for specific days. Their number is unlimited. When a call comes in and the phone is locked at the time, the lock turns off itself and the phone allows you to immediately press “Answer.” After the end of the conversation, the blocking is activated automatically.
5) Photo. The quality is satisfactory. It is possible to take photographs, so to speak, in two forms: when the photograph is obtained a) in its entirety on the entire screen, b) the size of a regular photograph. The shooting mode is activated by pressing a button on the body.
6) Use. Convenient menu button, never turned on on its own. It won't be able to unlock itself. 3 screens with custom widgets. You can create multiple calendars. There are no plugs for the mini-usb input and for headphones - they are not needed, they are not dusty, nothing fell out. The headphones fit tightly - you can even hang on them.

Disadvantages of the phone:

1) Sound + speakers. Without headphones, the bass is lost.
2) There is no timer, stopwatch. The calculator has only basic functions. The recording from the voice recorder is hard to hear.
3) Reads .pdf and .doc files very poorly. I don’t know how it happens, but it’s simply impossible to read from these formats.
4) In my opinion, it focuses the image for a long time, longer than my friends with Samsung and iPhone. In a room setting, photographs come out with an orange tint.
5) Slows down, maybe thinks about the command for 5 seconds. Sometimes, when you use it very harshly, when you turn on, switch, and cancel tasks very quickly, you may think about it.
6) In the cold it may not perceive touches - you need to warm up the phone and fingers so that they can see each other))
7) I don't play, so I can't say anything about apps

Nokia H8, the characteristics of which will be presented in this review, is the first phone from the Finnish brand to have a 12 megapixel camera. The company claims that when the smartphone hit the market, it became the leader, with a matrix size that was 30% larger than standard variants. The H8 phone has a 3.5-inch screen. The sensor supports gestures, multi-touch is installed.

What else distinguishes the Nokia H8 phone? It is the first of the company's entire range to run on the Symbian3 system. The gadget entered the market in 2010. In Russia it appeared on shelves in the fall. Without taxes and subsidies, the starting price was $499. Consumers from Russia had to pay 20 thousand rubles.

Specifications

  • With battery, the smartphone weighs 135 g.
  • Internal memory is 16 GB.
  • Lithium-ion battery. Capacity - 1200 mAh.
  • Camera - 12 MP.
  • RAM - 256 MB.
  • Form factor: monoblock.

Appearance and comfort

The phone received a high-quality concept that attracted the attention of consumers. The corners of the smartphone are beveled, the overall design is made in minimalist notes, and the use of metal immediately catches your eye. There are phones with similar designs in different lines and price categories, but this similarity is explained by the fact that they all came out in approximately the same time period.

The Nokia H8 phone, the characteristics of which make it possible to seriously consider purchasing it, becomes a leader in quality compared to previous models. The smartphone is made of aluminum, there is plastic only on the top and bottom. It fits the concept perfectly. Sold in 5 colors. You can find models in black, silver, blue, green and orange. The variety was well received by consumers.

The assembly is really at an excellent level. There are no gaps at the junction of plastic and metal. The advantages include a completely solid body. It follows that the battery is not removable, but this does not greatly affect consumer reviews. If your phone is frozen, you need to restart it using the power key. If the device is not used carefully, the plastic may be damaged.

Display and screen

The screen has a diagonal of 3.5 inches. Capacitive type. The manufacturer used protection for the outer surface. In general, the characteristics are quite adequate. The resolution was 640×360 pixels. Unfortunately, sometimes the picture does not look smooth, but pixelation does not occur due to the use of an appropriately sized screen.

Color reproduction is more than excellent; the Nokia H8 is praised for this. The characteristics of the matrix are quite adequate. Upon purchase, the display seems ideal, even when compared with some expensive models from Samsung. The screen behaves perfectly in the sun, no fading is observed. A special layer is installed that reflects the sun's rays.

Built-in sensor that responds to lighting. It allows you to automatically adjust the screen backlight. A proximity sensor is also installed. If you put the phone to your ear during a conversation, it will block itself. However, the device will not allow you to independently set the maximum brightness level. This is done so that the battery is used more economically.

Camera

Of all the phones that can compete with the proposed smartphone, this one has the best camera characteristics. Its resolution is 12 megapixels. The flash is installed. The work speed is high.

Battery

The Nokia H8 battery has a capacity of 1200 mAh. In the line the phone is part of, this figure is standard for everyone. According to the manufacturer, you can play on the device for 4 hours, browse pages in the browser for 6 hours, use the navigation system for 5 hours, watch videos for 6 hours, and listen to music for 45 hours. This is achieved by using a program to reduce power consumption.

The owners said that the phone can work for about 2 days under constant load. For such a device these are quite adequate indicators. With minimal use of the smartphone, it can last 3 days.

Communications

Of course, the Nokia H8, whose characteristics please every undemanding buyer, has an Internet module. If you wish, you can visit the “Settings” menu and activate the necessary options. There are few of them: the ability to connect to various networks, determine an access point, filter networks.

The USB standard is 2.0. Data transfer speed is 4 Mbit/s. If you wish, you can choose exactly how the process of connecting to a PC will occur. Options - disk storage device, player, photo printing. From your computer you can view both external storage and files located in internal memory. You can install flash drives up to 16 GB in size.

The manufacturer also took care of the ability to connect an ordinary storage device to the phone. Some people will like this feature, others will not. However, it is worth noting that a small number of smartphones support this option. Nokia H8 already has all the necessary programs as standard.

The Bluetooth module has been updated to version 3.0. All main profiles can be activated. At the time of the phone's release, Nokia H8 became the second one that works with this version. The data transfer speed is high, so there are no complaints.

The main advantage of the phone is its video capabilities. You can easily and without much difficulty broadcast video to a TV screen or a regular home theater. Moreover, to do this, it is not necessary to adjust the settings of the Nokia H8. It is enough to use the HDMI cable included in the kit to connect your smartphone to the TV and run games on it, open photos or play videos. You can watch movies from a flash drive or from a computer; you don’t have to transfer them to your phone’s memory.

In addition to everything described, there is also a transmitter for capturing radio waves.

Platform

The smartphone's hardware platform works perfectly, its speed pleases many buyers. The processor installed on the phone is fast in most cases.

The amount of RAM is 256 MB. Even with such a small indicator, all applications, including quite capacious ones, work quickly, and slowdowns occur extremely rarely. The built-in memory of Nokia H8 is 512 MB, of which only 360 MB is available to the user. If desired, you can connect 16 GB flash arrays and memory cards up to 32 GB.

In order for the screen to rotate to the required position when moving the phone, the manufacturer has built in an accelerometer. This process occurs without delay.

The GPS module is working. Its version supports updating, maps are scalable. There is also a built-in free voice function. The "Maps" version works quickly and as efficiently as possible. Therefore, we can safely say that this phone is convenient to use as a navigator. The lack of building numbers may frustrate the consumer. But this drawback applies only to residents of Russia. It is fully justified due to the fact that the service is provided free of charge.

Flaws

Sometimes the proximity sensor does not work. The manufacturer has fixed this problem by releasing new firmware.

Some built-in programs of Nokia H8 may freeze if they are all running in the background.

The disadvantages also include the fact that some devices have problems with brightness levels. For example, the transition from black to gray is quite abrupt. And at the minimum brightness level, the overall gamma is dominated by pink and purple.

After many users upgraded to the new version of the software, the list of supported video formats has decreased.

If there is a problem with the RAM being full, you need to roll back the phone to factory settings.

Results

The Nokia H8 speaker works great. It is installed alone, but the call is loud and clear. It can be easily heard if the phone is in a bag or jacket. The vibration alert is also clear and can be easily noticed from across the room. The call quality is excellent and there is nothing to complain about.

How much does Nokia H8 cost? Prices can vary significantly, but on average you will have to pay 15-20 thousand rubles.

Of all the Symbian smartphones, this one is the fastest. Unfortunately, if you compare it with other gadgets in this market segment, this speed is considered rather relative.

The company has constantly emphasized the camera and other multimedia capabilities. And all this in this smartphone is at the highest level. Still, the camera can be considered one of the advantages of the model. It is not equipped with many functions, but the resolution and image quality are excellent. The same can be said about video.

The disadvantages include the browser and screen. The first one sometimes freezes, and the second one fades a little in the sun. But this could well be considered nitpicking, especially considering that the phone is a 2012 release.

Overall, the smartphone is not bad and fully justifies the expressed interest of consumers. In fairness, it is worth noting that this model is popular, as evidenced by numerous laudatory reviews.

What I didn't like

It discharges very quickly, periodically freezes, reboots all the time, sometimes when turned on it turns off as if in spite of itself, the sensor is not very good, the music plays like in a cave... And in general, this phone's firmware is crooked.

What I liked

1. Almost all applications work, the graphics are good, there is a camera, there is a video and photo editor, an HTMI connector.

What I didn't like

In my opinion there is only one drawback.
This is when you start taking pictures and it glitches.

What I liked

Good, nothing to say!

What I didn't like

The disadvantages are the camera, the screen, the sound, and the speed everything opens so slowly for that kind of money you can buy something better

What I liked

Personally, I didn’t notice I bought it a week ago and was not happy with the purchase

What I didn't like

Photos taken in the dark with flash turn out hazy. Constantly freezes and reboots during a call. Doesn't turn on periodically. This is the beginning of the end. My phone lasted almost two years, although I never dropped it on the floor or in water. The board needed to be replaced, and this is the cost of the phone. A friend's phone of this model is also almost two years old. All of the above signs are already present. Apparently, her phone will soon be finished.

What I liked

Good video quality

What I didn't like

You cannot remove the battery if there is a glitch, but so far it has not glitched even once.

What I liked

Not very big, normal shape, fits well in the hand.

What I didn't like

catastrophe!! the sensor is faulty! When typing text in SMS or mail, it knocks out... it is impossible to type words. The reboot completely blew the mind of the phone! The dictionary does not match the selected language mode! you type d, it gives g, etc.. I’m shocked. where to go with him! what to do??

What I liked

everyone is lost

What I didn't like

What I liked

camera, apps,

What I didn't like

The mini-jack connector stopped working from the second month, even if it was handled with care. I changed the camera five times. The speaker is quiet. The screen is not multi-touch. The body is very soft. I’m not very strong, but when I started squeezing out of anger, dents appeared. The charge doesn't last very long. It takes about five hours.

What I liked

good camera, interface after flashing on Bella and that's it

What I didn't like

Symbian has become no longer relevant, it seems to me. It's time to find something on Android. Purple spots appeared when the camera was turned on, the plug for the hdmi cable was cracked and dust would get in there.

What I liked

metal body, it’s such a heavy body that you won’t lose it in your pocket! The kit included a convenient rubber case and an HDMI cable. rich equipment in general

What I didn't like

weak volume, no applications work,
turns itself off, the font is generally ugly,

What I liked

strong body, good sensor, good photo quality

What I didn't like

inconvenient browser, non-removable battery, inconvenient language translation

What I liked

excellent sound quality. Definitely sounds better than any other phone I've owned. Good camera. Of course, it can’t compare with a DSLR, but for a phone it’s at a very high level. Fast; does not glitch, does not slow down. Very functional

What I didn't like

Xenon flash
- symbian (as an OS), episode 40 was even better
- no separate call icon
- a slow touch (tested on many users), which requires some convincing
- Nokia brand (see below)
- plus the price is too high after a hundred years
- no unified connectors
- Chinese connector for the power cord - these won’t last long
- droplets of sound do not cause reliability - dangling snot
- replacing the battery through dancing with a tambourine
- Nokla does not release normal add-ons (on the last Bella she added 14MB of widgets - scribe as needed/required)
- can get very hot when charging (as if it wants to be charged with a fast charger in 15 minutes)
- when discharged, it does not immediately start working from the outlet (current is supplied, but it may not turn on the first time). Doesn't seem to hold reserves
- a square micro-usb connector, due to the tightness of the connector, it is fraught with instant failure - the connector is trapezoidal, and the connector is rectangular - playing the lottery every time is a pleasure
- the OVI brand store was meager even during its heyday, and now there is no trace of many applications there
- the screen can only be rotated 90° to the left and back
- high SAR level 1.02 W/kg

Recently, the press has been talking more and more about Nokia. There is something to talk about: the company’s management is almost completely changing, new devices are being harshly criticized by journalists in Western media, Nokia itself is suing some representatives of the Russian media, and so on. At the same time, it seems that everyone except Nokia itself understands that the fate of the company is now being decided. Although, perhaps, Nokia also understands this - it’s not for nothing that three top managers of the telephone giant will leave their posts in the next six months. But serious transformations are not done quickly, the creation of mobile phones is also not a quick process, so in the coming year we will have to get acquainted with those models that have been in Nokia's plans for a long time.

This time 3DNews will introduce readers to the flagship Nokia device, on which the Finnish company has the highest hopes. This is a kind of stone at a crossroads - at least the image of Nokia depends on how this phone performs, how much it wins the sympathy of buyers. Readers have probably already guessed what this mysterious smartphone is. Of course, this is the Nokia N8, which, in terms of the number of scandals that have flared up around it, is ready to compete with the Apple iPhone 4. Let's see if the device deserves all the unflattering reviews from the Western press and flattering reviews from loyal fans. By the way, a kind of first look at the N8 was already published on our website, but then they only gave us the smartphone to hold in our hands for about an hour, but now, after the official start of sales, we gave it out for a whole week.

As a short introduction to the article, we’ll tell you that recently our Western colleagues who were testing this device received a letter from one of their readers. The review compared the quality of photos taken using the built-in cameras of the Nokia N8 and the Apple iPhone 4. An enraged reader accused the editors of deliberately ruining the photos taken with the camera of the Finnish flagship, since all these editors want the collapse of Finland. After all, Nokia, according to this reader, is one of the main pillars of the economic system of our northern neighbor. Now that it is clear to what extent the atmosphere around the new flagship is heated, we can begin testing - thorough, balanced and objective.

⇡ Packaging and delivery

Let's start, traditionally, with the packaging and everything that is inside it. Nokia N8 comes in a small flat box made of blue cardboard with the outline of the smartphone itself depicted on it. The box format hints at the thinness of the phone, and the large packaging area suggests that the flagship smartphone comes with a rather large set of accessories.

And indeed, in addition to the phone itself, the box contains the following set of various useful things:

  • Compact charger;
  • USB -> micro-USB cable for connecting to a computer;
  • HDMI -> mini-HDMI cable for connecting to a TV;
  • User guide;
  • Rubber protective cover;
  • Headset with remote control;
  • A set of replaceable silicone tips for the headset;
  • Micro-USB -> USB adapter.

Most modern phones come with a much smaller number of extras, so the package can be called not just complete, but exhaustive.

Let's move on to the device itself, and in order to know what to expect from it, let's start with its brief characteristics.

Just look at the characteristics, and it immediately becomes clear that this is the flagship model of the Finnish company. Let the “iron” component not shine with any super-powerful components, but it is at a completely acceptable level. But the camera characteristics are impressive, and a large amount of built-in memory will not be superfluous.

⇡ Design and ergonomics

The phone looks solid. Nokia managed to preserve the corporate style, while making the device new, unlike the old ones. The rather large case with gray and black panels looks quite strict. But the coloring options don’t end there; the smartphone can also be purchased in poisonous light green, blue, gray and orange-red.

Almost the entire front panel is occupied by a display covered with glossy glass. Above the display, under the same glass, there is a front camera and a light sensor, and above the glass there is a small hole behind which the speaker is hidden. Below the display there is a single menu button and a tiny hole for a microphone.

The camera unit protrudes a few millimeters above the surface of the rear panel: a lens, a xenon flash and a speaker for playing melodies. Actually, there are no more functional elements on the back panel, except for the strap loops.

On the top edge there is a jack for a 3.5 mm headset or headphones, a tiny power button and a mini-HDMI connector covered with a glossy cap. The top panel itself is also glossy, and fingerprints remain on it from the first touch, even with freshly washed hands. On the bottom panel there is only a microscopic socket for the power connector and a huge number of various certificates of conformity. The RosTest mark once again confirms that we have a commercial sample in our hands.

The side edges are the most populated: on the left there are slots for a SIM card and a micro-SD memory card, as well as a micro-USB port, while on the right there is a rocker key for adjusting the volume, a two-position camera button and a lock/unlock slider devices. It should be noted here that you can connect a special adapter to a USB connector to the micro-USB connector, into which you can then insert flash drives or hard drives with external power support - the smartphone will recognize them as external media and provide the user with access to the files.

Most of the device's body is made of metal, in our case painted a noble matte black, although there are plastic inserts at the top and bottom of the phone. Without a case, the phone fits comfortably in your hand and hardly slips out, while with a silicone “bumper” it becomes a little thick and too big, difficult to fit into a pocket, and even more difficult to pull out.

Please note that the housing is not intended to be disassembled by the user. To remove the back cover, you will need a hex screwdriver. So replacing the battery will not be so easy. Even HTC, in its monolithic Legend, implemented the ability to remove the battery, while Nokia followed the path of Apple, confident that the user does not need to go into the inside of the smartphone.

The Nokia N8 display leaves an extremely pleasant impression. With a diagonal of 3.5 inches, its resolution is 640 x 360 pixels, and any images on it look neat and quite clear. The screen itself is made using AMOLED technology, so its contrast and color reproduction are also good. True, I immediately remember the vaunted Retina Display of the Apple iPhone 4 with a higher resolution and the same diagonal, which, despite its TFT origin, is not far behind the Nokia N8 display in terms of contrast. Unfortunately, the bright sun in autumn is a rare visitor, so we were not able to check how much it fades. However, it is known that any AMOLED displays behave quite well in the sun, so the Nokia N8 screen will probably also be quite readable under bright sunlight. The touch screen layer is made using capacitive technology. For some reason it suffers from a lack of responsiveness, but in most cases not so much that it annoys the user. Although in games the slow response of the display to pressing quickly makes itself felt. But the protective glass of the screen is unusual; it even has its own name - Gorilla Glass. It is distinguished by increased resistance to scratches, cracks and abrasions, which is very important for a touchscreen smartphone. It just so happened that during testing the Nokia N8 sometimes ended up in the same pocket with a heavy bunch of keys, but not a single scratch appeared on the glass after such tests - the material is really high quality.

The N8's sound is also good. The voice speaker is loud, the reception quality of the device is at a good level, so that the interlocutor can be clearly heard even in the subway. The speaker for playing melodies is also quite loud and, unlike most speakers in other phones, is capable of producing not only high frequencies, but also some hint of mids and even bass.

Nokia N8 is not in vain endowed with 16 GB of built-in memory - free space is unlikely to go to waste, since recording music and video on a smartphone is very simple. It’s even easier to download something from the OVI store, but there are very few useful or interesting videos available there yet. Nokia has not forgotten that a smartphone is also a kind of mobile entertainment center, and therefore has implemented a surprisingly convenient player. Its interface is somewhat reminiscent of an iPod, but this can be said about any good software player on modern mobile devices. True, Nokia went a little further, not hesitating to borrow from Apple the main “feature” of the player - the CoverFlow mode, in which you can flip through album covers.

Separately, I would like to note the good bundled headphones - it is rare that a manufacturer does not forget to include normal earbuds with silicone pads of three different sizes in the delivery package. They sound quite decent, especially compared to the standard white headphones on Apple phones. In addition, there is a small remote control on the wire, with which you can change the volume and accept/reject calls - this is also very convenient.

The situation is no worse with all kinds of wireless interfaces. Of all the phones this author has ever encountered, the Nokia N8 clings to Wi-Fi networks the most, literally digging into them, and support for Wi-Fi 802.11n contributes to excellent data transfer speeds. The Bluetooth 3.0 specifications were adopted quite a long time ago; moreover, the specifications for the fourth version of the “blue tooth” have already been announced, but real devices supporting the third version are just beginning to appear on store shelves.
